BACKGROUND

Together, Macani LLC and the Maudsley have a bold ambition to develop high quality psychiatric services in the United Arab Emirates.
The service has recently been commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Prevention to deliver a three year programme to embed quality and clinical pathways into the Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, Dubai. The Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital is a newly built, dedicated mental healthcare facility and will be the largest provider of psychiatric inpatient care in the UAE.
The aim is to support the existing Al Amal leadership team to develop the Hospital into a Centre of Excellence.
The postholder will be employed by Macani LLC and be working under an honorary contract with SLaM. Macani LLC is the local UAE partner of the Maudsley in the UAE. The Maudsley service in the UAE is managed by SLaM.

JOB PURPOSE

The contract is to drive process and service quality improvement across the hospital in partnership with Director and other senior colleagues and in collaboration with the existing Al Amal leadership. This will require providing advice, influencing and supporting the quality approach across the Hospital.

To provide professional leadership for the Occupational Therapy (OT) service to develop a sustainable high quality, innovative service across the Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital.

The post holder will be responsible for overseeing the professional governance of the occupational therapists working in the organisation and providing a strategic focus for the service, with a particular emphasis on meaningful service user and carer involvement in the development of Occupational Therapy policy and practice. They will provide expert advice to the Hospital Director, Managing Director, Medical Director, Nursing Director and other colleagues and will represent the OT service at local and regional levels.

The post will ensure that a socially inclusive, recovery-oriented approach to service delivery is encouraged and supported across the Hospital. They will actively promote inclusive opportunities for people who use services, and will coordinate the work of volunteers to support this.

To provide leadership and infrastructure to support evidence-based practice and research initiatives by engaging in establishing and links with professional and academic organisations.

To support the delivery of the contracted service.

ORGANISATIONAL POSITION

The post holder will report to the Director of Nursing, Maudsley Health, Al Amal Hospital.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Professional Leadership
To provide senior professional leadership and clinical leadership that supports and promotes the governance and development of OT, ensuring that they are consistent with legal requirements, national policy, accepted good, evidence-based practice and overall organisational objectives.
To influence the strategic agenda of the Hospital by working with the senior leaders.
To promote visionary leadership in the field of Mental Health Occupational Therapy.
To provide professional supervision and guidance to OTs and appraise their performance in conjunction with their Managers where appropriate.
To participate in, and influence, local and regional initiatives and forums representing the OT services, as agreed.
To actively seek and use opportunities to develop leading edge OT services to improve standards, competencies and responsiveness.
To continue to develop, implement and review a clear vision and strategy for Social Inclusion, Rehabilitation and Recovery.
To lead activities and facilitate partnership working with other agencies in relation to socially inclusive and recovery-oriented services.
To coordinate the work of volunteers in promoting social recovery and inclusion.
To undertake direct clinical work, role modelling best practice.
To be aware of and engage in local policy development in relation to socially inclusive and recovery-oriented services.
To take a lead responsibility for supporting the development and delivery of projects / initiatives / new models of service in relation to recovery and employment initiatives.
To enhance the Maudsley Health and the Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital as a learning environment and to utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research that promotes evidence-based practice and research and development making particular reference to recovery and social inclusion.
2. Occupational Therapy Service Development
To develop a clear vision and strategy for OT services that is in line with the diverse needs of the multicultural service user communities and corporate objectives
To maintain and further develop meaningful service user involvement in the development of OT policy and practice.
To ensure that innovative recruitment and retention strategies are devised and implemented to meet the manpower needs of the OT service.
To provide expert advice on workforce planning, skill, grade and ethnic mix related to OT staff and service developments.
To oversee the development of a CPD strategy for OT staff.
To contribute to the development of a Research and Development strategy.
To work with colleagues to develop services that are evidence-based and span mental and physical health care integration.
3. Occupational Therapy Service Standards
To ensure consistency and quality of professional standards of OT services, through strategic planning, project groups, standard setting, policy developments, audit and user focused monitoring of services.
To ensure that relevant statutory and professional guidance on OT is adhered to.
To advise where appropriate on issues relating to conduct and capability, and complaints that affect OT practice.
To support the accreditation of the Hospital.
6. Corporate Responsibilities
To contribute to the decision-making processes of the Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital.
To represent OT and provide expert advice on new requirements and developments in OT.
To assist the Hospital Director other Directors to achieve corporate objectives through multi-disciplinary forums and project work.
To represent Social Inclusion and Recovery activities.
7. Liaison with Users and Carers
To maintain and develop strong service user links, meaningfully involving service users and carers whenever possible in monitoring and developing OT services.
8. Other duties
To promote anti-discriminatory practice, cultural competence and equality of opportunity in OT
To undertake any other duties consistent with the role and seniority of the post.
