Trees for life - context

The core purpose of Trees for Life (TFL) is to restore the Caledonian Forest and all its constituent species of flora and fauna to the Scottish Highlands. By engaging volunteers to do this, TFL aims to provide a powerful and educational experience that will promote the work of restoration to wider audiences. Through providing a demonstration of the techniques of ecological restoration, TFL aims to inspire similar projects elsewhere in the UK and around the world.

Overall purpose of the job

This is a role of major importance for Trees for Life. The appointee will be a member of the Senior Management Team and will be involved in decision-making processes for the charity. The role is responsible for the strategic direction, planning, oversight and delivery of all fundraising and marketing activities, with the core objective of achieving Trees for Life’s income targets and continued growth.

Key Liaisons

The key focal points for liaison for the Head of Fundraising and Marketing are: the Senior Management Team; the Board of Directors; and external consultants (e.g. website design company).

Scope, Accountability and Resources

·  The Head of Fundraising and Marketing is the internal lead and adviser on all areas relating to fundraising and marketing

·  The Head of Fundraising and Marketing is responsible for leading the team to achieve annual income levels of c. £950,000. The major income stream is trusts and grants which accounts for c. 50% of fundraised income, but corporates and major donors are a growth area.

·  Contacts Database - key resource, and responsible for ensuring compliance with data protection requirements

·  All information resources within the Fundraising & Marketing area

Key responsibilities

Senior Management Responsibilities

·  Contributing to TFL’s strategic and business planning cycle, processes, and to all aspects of organisational management through the development and implementation of corporate policies and procedures. The post-holder will also play an important role in embedding the ethos, values and culture of the organisation.

·  Providing support to the Chief Executive in engagement with, and reporting to, the Board of Trustees in relation to Fundraising and Marketing and more widely.

Fundraising & Marketing Responsibilities

·  Developing and implementing TFL’s fundraising strategy, including setting and managing annual targets for each fundraising stream and balancing the overall portfolio.

·  Developing relationships with trusts, foundations and other major funding bodies and applying to them for both unrestricted income and funding for specific projects or posts (restricted income).

·  Developing the charity’s income from corporate partnerships securing major corporate support from new partnerships

·  Overseeing the development of the charity’s income from individual giving and leading on the organisation of occasional fundraising events.

·  Overseeing the development of the charity’s income from volunteer programmes.

·  Working effectively with colleagues across the charity to assess/monitor funding needs and ensuring that they understand and deliver on funders’ requirements (e.g. reporting to donors), and vice versa (i.e. to meeting the coordination and information requirements from other managers/teams).

·  Developing and implementing TFL’s marketing strategy and managing the marketing and communication activities for each fundraising stream to generate increased support for the charity.

General

·  Managing, leading and motivating the Fundraising/Marketing team members (Digital Marketing Officer, Trust and Corporate Development Officer, Supporter Relations Officer). This will include setting targets and work plans for the team and its members and the professional supervision of the Office Administrator and Assistant (who also contribute to fundraising/marketing activities).

·  Developing and managing budgets working in partnership with the Business Manager within the compass of the role with specific regard to effectiveness, efficiency and economy.

·  Carrying out additional work as necessary/ requested by the Chief Executive and Board.

Person Specification

We are looking for a highly successful fundraiser with excellent people management and relationship skills, who is well suited to playing a key role in organisational management overall.

Knowledge & Expertise

·  Professional level of expertise within fundraising, marketing or a relevant field gained through either higher education or experience – and ideally membership of the ICFM

·  A high level of fundraising knowledge across a variety of streams including trusts, corporate and individual giving is key;

·  Knowledge of fundraising legislation and Codes of Practice will be an important factor;

·  Knowledge of traditional and digital marketing techniques and branding is required; and

·  Knowledge of Scottish environmental and conservation issues would be beneficial.

Skills, competencies

·  Candidates must be highly organised and demonstrate the capacity to juggle and prioritise a diverse workload effectively, within broad charity frameworks;

·  Strong people-management skills are essential – candidates must be able to show that they possess a collaborative style that will encourage and stretch people within the Fundraising and Marketing team to achieve high standards;

·  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a high standard of written English are a prerequisite, enabling effective communication within TFL and externally;

·  Financial and budgetary management skills are essential; and

·  Candidates should be competent users of Microsoft Office packages; proficiency on Apple Mac computers is desirable as are Website CMS, donor database skills and presentation skills.

Experience

·  Candidates must be able to show an appropriate level of fundraising experience – the breadth and depth of experience will be more important than length of experience in demonstrating that candidates possess sufficient expertise to move into this demanding role;

·  Proven success in generating income and a clear capability to set and achieve challenging targets are essential;

·  Experience of developing successful fundraising strategies must be demonstrable and qualified;

·  Candidates should be innovative and creative in their approach, with the capacity to match projects with funding sources;

·  Proven experience in charity marketing is desirable; and

·  The capacity to manage a team is a prerequisite – significant experience of doing so or the potential to step into a team management role will be considered.
