Purpose of the role

The Special Events Co-ordinator will have responsibility for the delivery of a regular programme of film screenings and events in Brighton for CINECITY (the Brighton Film Festival) and in Eastbourne for Towner’s new auditorium opening in the summer of 2017.

CINECITY is part of the University and based within the School of Media’s Film Department and its three distinct sections along with Screen Archive South East and Film Hub South East. CINECITY delivers a year-round programme of events including the annual Brighton Film Festival, curating and presenting programmes of film and artists’ moving image work drawn from the UK and the world.

Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne, is an award-winning contemporary art gallery.It reopened in a brand-new building in 2009, is one of the new galleries in the South East and serves as a paradigm for the cultural regeneration of the English seaside town. Towner presents major exhibitions of UK and international contemporaryart and is creating a new cinema space in Eastbourne.

Line management responsibility for: n/a

Main areas of responsibility:

  • To be responsible for the programming arrangements of Towner’s Auditorium on a weekly basis and contribute to CINECITY programming

-develop programmes by working closely with and taking direction from Towner and CINECITY/UoB senior staff in order to work within the two separate administrative and financial systems

-research the availability of film titles identifying rights holders and screening formats

-arrange film bookings with licensors, box office returns to distributors and payments to both

-organise national and international print transport logistics, ensuring that all films arrive and are returned on time

-liaise with technical staff throughout this process

  • To organise the scheduling, the coordination of all publicity and the marketing of the programme of events

-work to and meet the agreed planning cycles and milestones following established systems and procedures

-source and prepare copy, photographs,trailers related to the film programmes for print websites, social media and marketing

-produce event and screening schedules as required

-

  • To support the Film Department’s aim of developing film exhibition in the region

-organise and take an active role in the delivery of Cinema Plus activities (eg introductions, talks, discussions, activities for children and young people) as required to deepen audience engagement with the programmes

-support the work of Film Hub South East and the audience development work of its members by sharing knowledge, contacts and successful event formats

-contribute to the University of Brighton student experience by inducting and mentoring film exhibition-related work placements / volunteers

-supporting academic staff in their delivery of modules and projects within the School of Media

  • To contribute to CINECITY, the University and Towner’s monitoring, reporting and planning processes

-monitor and record all activity as required

-contribute data to relevant funder evaluation reports as required and ensure the impact data is ready for the annual report at the end of the calendar year

-support senior staff in the generation of new funding applications

-be aware of and support the development of Towner and CINECITY’s audience development strategies (e.g diversity, children & young people, scheduling, the use of themes / strands, marketing)

-attend and contribute to training activities and special events related to film programming and film exhibition

  • Equivalent to GCSE Grade C or above

  • Substantial and relevant work experience in the film and/or gallery sector

  • Any appointment is generally made at the bottom of the salary range for the grade dependent upon experience and previous salary.
  • This is a full time post and is fixed term for 1 year.
  • Annual leave entitlements are shown in the table below and increase after 5 years’ service. In addition, to the eight Bank Holidays, there are university discretionary days between Christmas and New Year. All leave, including bank holidays and discretionary days, is pro-rated for part time employees.
