Job title: e-Learning Technologist
Reporting to: Director of Curriculum and Learning / ILT Strategy Group
Hours: 37 hours per week/ full time
Salary: Ranging from £25,647 - £30,486 per annum
Closing Date: Wednesday 19 July 2017 at 5:00pm
Job purpose:
To be the administrator for Moodle (VLE) and e-Learning services. This role will include supporting and training staff in using the systems.
Context:
As part of the College Information Learning Technology (ILT) strategy we wish to improve the access of information to staff and students.

To open up the potential of a world of information and engagement through information technology.
The key way that ILT can contribute to the work of the RNC is by developing the skills of its stakeholders. Technology provides a means of equalising the position of people who are blind or partially sighted, removing many of the barriers they face, leading to greater opportunities to participate in the community, in education, in the workplace, and in leisure activities. The right technology can give independence back to a person who has been reliant on assistance or who has just lost their sight. This is dependent on effective training and support and access to the appropriate software and hardware.
The overarching ILT aims of the College are to:
- Equip students and customers with the skills and confidence in IT to engage independently in education, employment and everyday activities
- Optimise our use of IT to run an efficient, effective and sustainable organisation
We see the main information system resources for this are SharePoint and Moodle, we also have a Management Information System.
The RNC Moodle VLE has seen some development over the last year. It is important that our systems are managed with accessibility and usability at the heart, taking into account screen reading and large print software.
Main duties and responsibilities:
Moodle
Responsible for the organisation’s Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) and administration, including the overall structure, design, course layout, permissions, in line with the RNC Moodle Protocol document.
Ensure it is fit for purpose and develop it in line with organisational needs. Ensure that the system works well with our Assistive Technology systems and it adheres to our accessibility guidelines. This will include designing accessible themes that suit the needs of our students and the variety of eye conditions.
Manage Moodle in line with the Protocol document, this includes:
Technical Management: Backup Processes, Archiving, User Passwords, Updates, Add-ins, Health checks
User Management: Roles and Responsibilities, registration and enrolment, cohorts, removal staff/learners,
Course Management: Accessibility and Usability, Category areas, course creation requests, courses with assignments, online courses, quality assurance, Monitor engagement and activity.
Course Delivery: Accessibility and usability, enrolment, quality, technical support, use of Video Audio
Training and Support: Inducting staff, technical support, training area with FAQ,
Research suitability of available plugins, through liaising with the wider Moodle community.
Keep up-to-date with developments (technological and pedagogical) in e-learning and ILT, and disseminate these tocolleagues and implement changes as appropriate.
Work in conjunction with the IT Services to ensure configuration and maintenance is regularly undertaken,this may involve out of hours working
Other systems
Implement and manage an e-portfolio system, web based video & photo library that meets the organisation’s needs. Integration into other systems as required; these could include Office 365, SharePoint and Moodle.

Education:
- Minimum of Level 2 qualification in literacy and numeracy (e.g. GCSE English and Maths at grade A*-C)
- Degree in IT or Professional IT qualification or significant workplace experience
- Relevant professional qualifications
Knowledge & Experience:
- Administering Windows Server, Linux, Apache & SQL
- Moodle front end administration (user and course management)
- Moodle back end administration including updates, security checks, backups and archiving
- Supporting with a VLE
- Working in IT in an educational environment
- Specialist VI assistive technologies
- Moodle plugins and evaluation of their usefulness.
- Developing applications/web apps (e.g. C#/ASP.Net/VB.net/PHP)
- HTML, Java Script, VB/ASP.net, CSS and PHP
- Customising themes
- Current IT legislation
- Knowledge of creating SharePoint site collections and pages
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver training to technical and end users.
- A systematic approach to work and strong organisational and planning skills.
- Use initiative to resolve problems and find resolutions
- Ability to create detailed documentation, maintain accurate records and produce training materials
