Trees for Life - context
The core purpose of Trees for Life (TfL) is to restore the Caledonian Forest and all its constituent species of flora and fauna to the Scottish Highlands. By engaging volunteers to do this, TfL aims to provide a powerful and educational experience that will promote the work of restoration to wider audiences. Through providing a demonstration of the techniques of ecological restoration, TfL aims to inspire similar projects elsewhere in the UK and around the world.
Overall purpose of the job
The purpose of thisrole is to assist in the propagation and growing-on of plant stock in the Dundreggan Tree Nursery to the standards agreed with the Nursery Supervisor.

Nursery Supervisor, Nursery Assistant, Volunteers.
Scope, Accountability and Resources
- The scope of the job is restricted to effective handling and onward propagation of tree seedlings, mixing appropriate composts under instruction and managing the supply of materials to maximise process efficiency.
- Accountable for plant seedling survival and appropriate use of materials
- Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of nursery equipment and tools.
- Responsible for keeping accurate records of nursery activity.
- Resources include nursery fixed equipment.
Key responsibilities
- Plant care activities such as pricking out, potting up, lining out, watering and weeding within the nursery.
- Keeping accurate records of nursery activities.
- Maintenance of hand tools and some nursery equipment.
- Assisting in planning nursery activity, and occasionally supervising volunteers in carrying out nursery activities.
General
- Carrying out additional work as necessary/ requested by the Dundreggan Operations Manager.
- Assisting with general care of the nursery grounds.
Person Specification
Knowledge & Expertise
- Be able to recognise key parts of a growing plant (e.g. roots, leaves, stem)
- Knowledge of factors involved in plant health.
Skills & Competencies
- Good dexterity/fine manipulation skills for detailed work with small and delicate seedlings and cuttings.
- Reasonable levels of numeracy and literacy.
Experience
- Experience of horticultural work, particularly if related to trees
Personal Attributes
- Able to get on with others.
- Able to work in outdoor conditions for extended periods.
- Accuracy in nursery records keeping.
- Able to stand or sit upright for extended periods.
- Resourceful and flexible and able to work on their own initiative.
