Direct reports:6 – Deputy Director Retail Sales Operations,Deputy Director Retail Business Planning & Implementation, Head of Trading, Head of Retail Recycling, Assistant Director Marketing and Communications and PA., (Dotted Line) Senior Retail Accountant

Indirect reports:1750 staff, 10,500 volunteers (headcount to increase via expansions)

Budget managed:£68m gross income growing to £82m in 3yrs. Net contribution £14m growing to £17m in 3 years

Context:

Barnardo’s very successful retail and trading operation has ambitious plans to grow over the next 3 years and beyond to deliver on the new corporate strategy and significantly increase voluntary income.

Job Purpose:

Provide strategic development, leadership and management of Barnardo’s retail and trading businesses ensuring all activities are managed cost effectively and deliver maximum net income.

To deliver against ambitious growth plans for retail and trading and align with the corporate strategy.

To actively contribute to the leadership within Barnardo’s as a member of Corporate Leadership Group.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead, manage and motivate direct reports ensuring clear objectives are set and they have responsibility and accountability for delivering against strategy and plans for their business area.

To drive forward the strategy for the retail expansion, constantly reviewing and evaluating the approach, format and net profit against projections

To set and monitor annual income and expenditure budgets ensuring all costs are managed effectively and in accordance with agreed standards.

To oversee, monitor and drive performance across the Retail and Trading businesses to achieve and exceed income targets

To be a key member of the Income and Innovation leadership team and contribute to the income generation strategy for Barnardo’s

Chair the Barnardo’s Trading Ltd Board (subsidiary company) providing governance, oversight and management of risk. Ensure compliance with all charity, health and safety and accountancy regulations

Key Activities:

Work with key members of the leadership team to contribute to and deliver the income generation strategy and deliver against the organisational strategy

Ensure effective processes and financial systems are in place to ensure profit protection is maximised, appropriate management information is available to enable stores, and area managers to maximise performance against key KPIs and performance measures

Ensure the rigorous and effective performance management structure and indicators are monitored and reviewed in line with the business plan.

Work closely with the HR business partner to identify opportunities for staff development within retail and trading, to empower staff and volunteers in line with the evolvement of the business line

Ensure collaborative working with key teams such as marketing and communications, brand, fundraising, business development and children’s services

Maximise the contribution of retail volunteers by ensuring consistent high standards of support, clear identification of roles and skill matching

To innovate and investigate potential new ways of working and new income opportunities which will maximise retail profits and ensure the delivery of the Retail and Trading Operational Business Plan

Develop and implement a strategy fordigital within retail and trading identifying marketing and PR opportunities and online retail growth

Protect and enhance the Barnardo’s reputation, enhance brand presence delivering positive coverage and support.

Undertake regular horizon scanning and benchmarking to keep up to date with developments in the sector and ensure the business is continually evolving and developing

Education/Knowledge

-Educated to degree level or equivalent professional qualification

-Experience of developing and delivering a growth strategy in a retail environment

-Extensive experience of utilising financial data and business information to drive performance and deliver ever improving ROI

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills

-Skilled at the development and oversight of multi-channel campaigns

Experience

-Extensive experience in a high profile Retail management role in a complex organisation.

-Experience of reputation management and dealing with senior level contacts both internal and externally.

-Experience of working with external partners to deliver.

-A strong team leader and motivator, experienced within a performance management framework.

-A strategic thinker, demonstrated through the delivery of numerous effective Retail and Trading campaigns.

-A proven innovator.

-Can demonstrate using non-paid channels to amplify impact.

-Experience of embracing and embedding diversity and inclusion into business lines and operations.

Circumstances

-Full time role.

-Based at Barnardo’s Head Office in Barkingside, with some working at our Borough office as and when required.

-Able to accommodate significantl UK travel and to spend nights away from home, usually on a planned basis.

-Able to work the hours to complete the job and able to travel at short notice.

-Able to work within a non-smoking environment.
