Purpose / This theory-based unit standard is for people in the automotive repair industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of vehicle ABS, TCS, and ESC and testing faults in vehicle ABS, TCS, and ESC.

4 Definitions

ABS, TCS, and ESC refer to anti-lock braking systems, traction control systems, and electronic stability control, respectively. These are generic terms used by vehicle and component manufacturers under different marketing names and abbreviations.

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications and legislative requirements.

Service information may include but is not limited to – technical information of a vehicle, machine, or product detailing operation; installation and servicing procedures; manufacturer instructions and specifications; technical terms and descriptions; and detailed illustrations. This may be accessed from the manufacturer.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of vehicle ABS, TCS, and ESC.

Performance criteria

1.1 The purpose of vehicle ABS, TCS, and ESC are described.

1.2 Main components in the systems are identified and their functions described.

Range includes but is not limited to – control module, wheel speed sensors, lateral acceleration sensors, steering angle sensors, yaw sensors diagnostic data link, solenoids, pump motor, warning lamps.

1.3 How ABS, TCS, and ESC operate is described.

1.4 Reasons for integrating ABS, TCS, and ESC electronic control modules with the vehicle network bus (CAN) are described.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of testing faults in vehicle ABS, TCS, and ESC.

Performance criteria

2.1 Precautions to prevent damage to components when working on vehicle ABS, TCS, and ESC electronic control systems are identified.

Range includes but is not limited to – cleanliness, control unit memory retention, disconnecting and connecting circuits and plugs, access point location, pin connection and wiring damage, control unit isolation.

2.2 The importance of obtaining diagnostic information before any testing is carried out is described.

2.3 Testing procedures are described.

Range includes but is not limited to – tracing circuits, test points, reading and interpreting self-diagnostic test codes, manual testing.
