Type of position: Part time 22.5 hours per week, term time only, plus 2 weeks by mutual agreement

The School

Charters School was founded in 1958 and is a large, mixed academy school with 1708 pupils including 483 in the Sixth Form. The School is set in an area of Green Belt with surrounding urban residential areasand is over-subscribed year on year. We have shared ownership of Tirabad Outdoor Activity Centre in South Wales which is used extensively throughout the year by all year groups; the school works closely with the on-site Recreation Centre and Youth Club; the school has two Co-Headteachers who lead a stable, highly effective SLT, a highly committed staff and Governors with supportive parents and co-operative, motivated students; high achieving Ofsted Outstanding since December 2009.

Ascot has excellent transport links with the M3, M4 and M25 motorways all within an easy drive and is located on the mainline into London Waterloo. Windsor Great Park, popular with runners, polo players and dog walkers alike is 5 minutes’ drive from the school and Ascot Racecourse with whom we have a good working relationship,offers excellent facilities in the local area.

Our Ambition

Two significant but essentially unsolicited donations in the last few years by an ex student and a parent have enabled us to refurbish a former caretaker’s bungalow into a fully functioning and effective pastoral hub and to purchase additional land at Tirabad our Outdoor Activity Centre. Our ambition now is to develop an effective income generating strategy to enhance the learning environment at Charters School and in particular to provide the balance of funding for our new multi sports facility.

The Development and Alumni team at Charters

We have two part time members of administrative staff who over the past 18 months have established the basic structure of an Alumni Society: Charters Connect and have begun the process of contacting former students. We have a small programme of reunions and celebratory events; a presence on social media; a dedicated database; an alumni section in our termly school magazine and a separate alumni section on our website.

The Role

Reporting to the Co-Headteacher Mr Richard Pilgrim, with support from the School Business Manager and Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for community links, the Development Manager will work across the whole school community and have responsibility for the school’s development strategy: fund-raising and alumni relations.

The Development Manager will identify and cultivate philanthropic support by developing and maintaining relationships with the business community, charitable trusts and foundations and individuals, including alumni, parents, staff and others who share an interest in the school’s development.

In addition, the Development Manager will be responsible for the performance, integrity and security of the alumni database (InTouch), the management of events, the production of effective campaign materials, the alumni section of the school’s website, our presence on social media and in Charters News, our termly magazine.

You will have direct responsibility for:

Fundraising Activities

  • To develop and implement an effective income generating strategy
  • Propose and agree a Development budget with the Co-Headteacher and Business Manager
  • Develop and manage a prospect research programme to identify and cultivate donors for a Major Donor Programme
  • Management of campaign events and communication
  • Produce monthly financial and analytical reports to the Co-Headteacher and Business Manager
  • To represent the school professionally and in keeping with its ethos in all relationships

Alumni Relations

  • Develop and implement a strategy to re-establish and maintain contact with ex-students building on the work already done through Charters Connect
  • Devise and implement an annual programme of events and reunions; this will require some evening and weekend work for which time in lieu may be given at your line manager’s discretion
  • Oversee the alumni section of the website to ensure that content is up to date, relevant and appealing
  • Oversee the school’s presence on social media to ensure that it is relevant, appropriate and engaging
  • Oversee the alumni database (InTouch) so that records are maintained accurately and efficiently and that data remains consistent across the database.
  • Use every opportunity to showcase the achievements of the alumni community

Key criteria for success

  • An effective income generating strategy agreed and in place with potential sources of philanthropic income identified and cultivation plans in place for key prospects.
  • Solicitation of gifts and approaches to major donors, foundations and corporate organisations prioritised and significant in-roads made into the current financial target.
  • An active and engaged alumni community established

Terms and Conditions

Salary

£45,000 pa FTE Actual £24,026pa

Hours of work

22.5 hours per week, term time only plus 2 weeks by mutual agreement. There is a need to be flexible about hours in order to carry out these duties and responsibilities effectively and no additional payment is made in this respect. In addition some evening and weekend working may be required. These hours may be agreed in advance with your line manager and time off in lieu may be given at your line manager’s discretion.

Probationary Period

This appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period of six months.

Fixed Term Contract

This opportunity is initially to August 2016. An extension of contract will depend on meeting Key Performance Indicators to be agreed on appointment.

Lunch Break

There is an unpaid lunch break of 30 minutes. Lunch may be taken in the Dining Hall.

Holidays

This is a term time only (38 weeks) appointment and the salary includes 6.4 weeks paid holiday which ordinarily will be taken during the school holidays.

Staff have subsidised use of the on-site Recreation Centre after 4.30pm and at weekends.
