Job Title: Debt Advisor

Salary: £17,000 - £21,600 per annum dependant upon salary and qualification

Hours: 35 hours per week or two part time posts of 17.5 hours per week

Location:The location of the post will be shared between both Llangefni and Dolgellau

Age Cymru Gwynedd a Môn aims to promote the wellbeing of older people to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience and the Debt Advice Service is responsible for supporting older people in severe financial hardship in making choices, gaining their entitlement and ensuring that their rights are protected.

Job Purpose: To provide Debt Advice through individual casework to older people from all backgrounds. To supervise and train staff and volunteers in providing debt advice to older people

Job Requirements: At least 2 years’ experience in providing debt advice is essential. Certificate in Debt Advice from the Institute of Money Advisors or ICM Qualified (or currently working towards) will be essential. Must be bi-lingual (Welsh/English)

Reporting Line: Reports to Chief Officer

Key Activities and Main Responsibilities

  1. Provide person centred individual debt advice and casework to people aged 50+, including many who have mental health issues; have substance abuse issues; are the subject of safeguarding procedures or are otherwise vulnerable.
  1. Work constructively and collaboratively with social workers and other professionals, including participating in case conferences and other meetings.
  1. Work collaboratively with other ACGM teams, including Information and Advice and Advocacyto ensure debt advice and other benefit needs are appropriately met.
  1. Assist clients with financial matters, including sorting out benefits and setting up payments to enable clients to remain in their chosen accommodation and ensure they are paying their bills. Provide basic assistance with legal matters, for example supporting with referrals to solicitors.
  1. Create and maintain clear and accurate electronic client records and ensure the confidentiality of such records, including carrying out home visits to clients, making telephone calls on their behalf and following up on any issues raised by them. Providing monthly reports on client cases and areas of individual case issues to line manager.
  1. Undertake any other duties as reasonably required by ACGM and commensurate with grade of post.
  1. Partake in any training that is relevant to the post and further learning, and take responsibility for ongoing training and development of self, staff and volunteers.
  1. Undertake safeguarding advocacy for staff/volunteers within the organisation.

Key Skills and Abilities

  1. Excellent listening skills and the ability to empathise with people from a wide range of backgrounds and communities.
  1. Excellent bilingual verbal and written communication skills.
  1. Able to adopt a flexible approach to work, including the ability to react spontaneously when the need arises; organise and prioritise workload and meet deadlines. Must be able to think laterally and take the necessary action to resolve specific problems.
  1. Must be friendly with a high degree of self motivation, initiative, drive and enthusiasm. Requires a real commitment to helping improve the quality of life for individual older people, particularly those who are in severe financial difficulties.
  1. Able to work confidently on own initiative and as part of a team.
  1. Good I.T. skills, including word processing, data entry, email and internet; good general education and standard of numeracy and literacy.
  1. Current driving licence and use of a car.

Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications

  1. Substantial experience (minimum 2 years) of paid or voluntary work providing debt advice to vulnerable people; this must include contact with people within their own homes and preferably from a variety of backgrounds and communities.
  1. High level of knowledge and understanding of the wide range of issues affecting older people, including debt and other financial advice
  1. Clear understanding of diversity and equality issues, safeguarding, discrimination and disadvantage as these affect older people.
  1. Experience of developing working relationships and communication with a diverse range of staff and volunteers from statutory and voluntary organisations.
  1. Must have ICM qualification or working towards within 6 months of appointment.
