Reports to:DrMichael Smith, Head of IT at Dianomi Limited.

Location:Place of work isDianomi Ltd premises in central London (near Victoria Station) with regular travel to the University of Brighton.

Academic Support:Academic input will be provided by the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Brighton.

Department:Research, Enterprise and Social Partnerships (RESP) at the University of Brighton.

Salary:The salary is £30,000 - £35,000 pa dependent on qualifications and experience, rising to £40,000 pa for an exceptional candidate. Plus a personal development budget of just under £4k.

Purpose of the role

The 21 month project aims to develop intelligent, data driven systems to improve the effectiveness of advert placement in specialist financial publications, and to visualise process and results.

Main areas of responsibility:

Project Phase / Work to be undertaken / Output(s)
Phase 1 / Familiarisation with Dianomi's business model and platform in the context of the market and the company's business plan; identifying best practice and innovation in data mining methodology and artificial intelligence approaches relevant to financial sector content marketing. / Sector review, competitor analysis, literature review, and platform review
with initial recommendations.
Phase 2 / Development of a data warehousing architecture and running the CRISP-DM (Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining) methodology to analyse the functionality of Dianomi's current technology and inform platform features and attributes. Selection of machine learning techniques and models and application to a selected group of representative campaigns. / Platform selected, and core algorithms selected and tested.
Phase 3 / Development of a bespoke data mining methodology and deployment of models according to a testing protocol, likely to involve parallel implementation of new and existing models in live systems or simulation of new models using previous campaign data. / Data mining methodology and pilot platform deployment.
Phase 4 / Selection and evaluation of visualisation tools and implementation of these to produce data and process visualisations. Testing of visualisations to assess understandability followed by optimisation as required. / Data visualisation tool, model visualisation, and
business impact metrics.
Phase 5 / Incorporation of the outcomes into marketing materials and completion of training and embedding before reporting, quantifying the impacts and handing over the project. / Marketing materials; business impact forecast; final report.

General responsibilities

The project is challenging, requiring many Data Scientist skills. Whilst prior knowledge and experience in all the areas identified below is desirable, support and training will be available to help develop the Associate.

  • Minimum 2:1 BSc in Computer Science, Computer Science with Business or equivalent along with a Masters degree. The Master’s degree is considered necessary to ensure the graduate has sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge to match the complexity and ambition of the programme however candidates who can demonstrate that experience substitutes for a Masters may be considered.

  • Strong programming skills (e.g. Java, C#), in particular programming enterprise systems, and the ability to use other languages (e.g. Perl, Python) where necessary.
  • Knowledge, ideally with evidence of application gained through project work, placement and/or work experience, of Data mining tools, ideally within a software framework such as Hadoop.

  • Knowledge and experience of devising/adapting algorithms and the use of statistical packages.
  • Good understanding of software systems administration (in particular unix / linux operating systems), with experience of compiling and installing software packages.

-Machine learning approaches and tools.
-Data warehousing, database development and data integration
  • Experience with or knowledge of data visualisation would also be an advantage.

  • Although a knowledge of financial content marketing is not required, commercial aptitude and the ability to understand the needs of internal and external customers is essential.
  • Have the aptitude to apply technologies developed through research to a commercial scenario, with the ability to deliver tangible commercial outputs and intermediate deliverables.
  • Have the ability to conduct a technology review: to research available packages, critique and analyse options, and implement them within the workplace.
  • Have awareness of the business context of computer systems.
  • Have an ambition and ability to take ownership for a significant and challenging technical project.
  • Have a methodical and considered approach to project planning and management, along with a pragmatic and flexible approach focussed on meeting the needs of the project. Experience of a project management methodology would be useful although training can be provided if required.
  • Be an excellent communicator, with an engaging personality to support the development of strong, effective relationships with colleagues and aptitude to deliver training.

Duration of job:The appointment is for a fixed term of 21 months in accordance with the period of funding.

On completion of the Partnership, there is a possibility that the company may be in a position to offer the KTP Associate a permanent full-time position.
