Purpose of role
Communities Can is a programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund, which aims to test out a new approach for providing support to small, informal community groups and organisations. It’s currently happening in 5 different places across the country (Barking & Dagenham, Blackpool, Peterborough, Sunderland and Torbay). This role will drive the project in Torbay. It will be the ‘face’ of Communities Can in the area.
In partnership with Torbay Community Development Trust, we are proactively seeking out the small, informal community groups and activities that are happening locally to find out how we can best support them.
If they are interested, we guide the group through a simple application process and match them with a local organisation that can deliver, on a paid-for basis, the support the group needs at no cost to the group themselves.
Duties of the role
The Community Outreach Workerwill be responsible for:
•Assertively outreaching and developing and sustaining positive relationships with a range of local groups and organisations;
•Conducting an assessment with community organisations applying to Communities Can to assess their suitability for support and their key support needs. These will primarily be conducted by telephone or on a face to face basis if required.
•Provide the monthly Assessment Panel for Torbay with the detail of applicant organisations and propose a package of support to enable the organisation to develop.
•Chair the monthly Assessment Panel for Torbay to discuss the application and the proposed support package.
•Liaising with organisations that provide support on a paid for basis.
•Completing the required paperwork to allow for the support packages to be administered within specified timeframes.
•Publicising the project through flyers, posters, social media, writing case studies and networking with local groups and organisations;
•Supporting face-to-face, online, and print communication and marketing activities;
•Organising or participating in events and networks as required to ensure the pipeline of applications to Communities Can is sufficient.
Person specification - knowledge, skills and attributes
The ideal candidate will:

- Have excellent knowledge of Torbay.
- Have experience with outreach and recruiting participants from all community and culturalgroups including through use of social media.
- Have considerable experience in assessing and advising groups on their organisational development needs and be able to define specific development packages within exacting deadlines.
- Be able to commit to working to fixed monthly Assessment Panels.
- Have an enthusiasm for talking to different people and bringing them together.
- Be able to write up findings from the application process.
- Be hard working, reliable and professional –able to manage a varied and challenging workload.
- Be highly committed to working with all groups in the community in an inclusive, positive manner.
- Be a “self-starter”, organising your own workload and priorities and using your own initiative.
- Be interested in and committed to the values of The Young Foundation and our work on Communities Can.
- Be willing to travel across Torbay and to make occasional trips to London.
- Be confident using email and social media (such as Facebook or Twitter).

- Have some experience of organising events and working with different communities.
- Have a full clean driving license.
- Have occasional access to a car for work use as required.
