Job title:Campaigner

Reports to:Campaign Leader, Climate Change

Salary: £41,193

Location: London, with overseas travel as required

Role Purpose

This role will help to shape and be responsible for implementing advocacy strategies for the climate change campaign. With a particular focus on fossil fuels and the fossil fuel sector you’ll build alliances and identify and mobilise influential champions to achieve the campaign’s aims.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Advocacy

  • Influence a broad range of decision makers and opinion formers using robust and evidence-based Global Witness research and investigations
  • Support the development of advocacy messages and strategies for the campaign
  • Write campaigning and investigative documents ranging from notes and internal briefings through to press releases and reports
  • Monitor key developments relevant to the campaign and help shape and update Global Witness policy
  • Identifyopportunities for policy and legislative debate and action through events, publications and web-based activity
  • Contribute to the development, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of Global Witness’ campaign outcomes

Relationships and Partnerships

  • Proactively identify, develop and leverageproductive relationships with key opinion formers and policy makers
  • Drive a collaborative approach through developing and participating in coalitions with a diverse range of stakeholders includingnon-governmental organisations (NGOs), think-tanks, climate scientists, the financial and business sectors, politicians, journalists and others.

Communications

  • Work in partnership with the communications team to turn complex policy and legislative issues into digestible communications products
  • Provide content for written communications for a range of external audiences including: politicians, the media, opinion formers and influential supporters, key social media users and the public.
  • Act as a spokesperson forGlobal Witnesswith the media and with high level advocacy contacts
  • Build strategic and ongoing relationships with members of the media
  • Prepare materialson key policy areasfor Global Witness’ website, social media, for blog posts and talking points
  • Prepare responses to government consultations, inquiries and policy documents and those of relevant external agencies (e.g. think tanks, independent commissions or NGOs)
  • Monitor stakeholder and media outlets for breaking or major developments and announcements.

  • Manage the work of volunteers as and when required
  • Any other duties equalto the skills and responsibilities required for this role as directed by the Campaign Leader
  • This role is based in London. It is likely it will involve regular travel overseas, but this is negotiable for flexible working needs.
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Experience of delivering successful campaigns
  • Sound knowledge of how effective and innovative campaign strategies and plans can influence targets to achieve change. Either through having helped to shape strategies and plans or having being responsible for delivering them.
  • Deep understanding of the challenge of tackling the climate crisis
  • Proven ability to write, edit and produce campaign messages for a variety of audiences
  • Experience of conducting media interviews
  • Experience of employing effective negotiation and persuasion
  • Proven ability to prioritise and organise own work load
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and react effectively to a rapidly changing issue.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people in a broad range of situations, including with key partner organisations.

Desirable

  • Experience in journalism or undertaking investigative work, including in developing countries
  • Direct experience of working on issues of climate change or human rights abuses
  • Knowledge of global campaign efforts to reduce emissions from the coal sector
  • Fluency in another language
