Job Title: Academic Enrichment Programmes Manager (maternity cover)

Salary: £28,695 – £37,394 per annum, depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

Reporting to: Deputy Head of Widening Participation

Purpose of the Role:

To develop and deliver an innovative programme of activities and initiatives aimed at encouraging students from underrepresented backgrounds to progress to higher education and especially the University of Nottingham and other selective universities. Specifically this role has complete management of the post-16 Ambition Nottingham academic enrichment activities linked to the curriculum and up to two summer schools for national post-16 students.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Develop and deliver a programme of post-16 academic enrichment activities, via the Ambition Nottingham Programme to attract and support prospective high achieving, widening participation students to the University of Nottingham. Processes include:
·  liaising with academic colleagues, teachers, and teaching consultants to identify, programme and develop appropriate activities
·  maintaining the focus on raising awareness of and attainment to selecting universities
·  managing the programme of events and the associated on-line database and booking system
·  managing relevant support staff
·  applying relevant legislation and guidelines
·  evaluating data and feedback, researching and analysing the scope for further development and revising the activities and strategy where necessary
·  preparing and managing the post-16 academic enrichment budget to ensure expenditure is allocated appropriately over priority areas
·  preparing reports on programme activities and developments on request / 40%
2. / Programme and manage two widening participation national summer schools for high achieving post-16 students in association with the Sutton Trust. Processes include:
·  liaising with academics and WP staff to devise the summer school academic streams
·  maintaining the focus on increasing applications and intake to the University in order to help the University to meet its Widening Participation targets
·  overseeing the recruitment, training and management of summer school ambassadors
·  developing and implementing a participant recruitment and retention strategy
·  overseeing and ensuring the safe delivery of the residential activity
·  applying relevant legislation and guidelines
·  overseeing the post summer school e-Mentoring scheme and facilitating the involvement of programme participants on Year 13 support activities
·  evaluating activities and making recommendations for the future
·  preparing and managing the summer schools budget
·  contributing to the preparation of funding bids and the stewardship of donors as appropriate / 35%
3. / Contribute to wider team initiatives as required and any other duties appropriate to the role and level. This is to include membership of various Widening Participation Team working groups as well as the development of resources for the HEFCE funded North East Midlands Collaborative Network (NEMCON). / 20%
4. / Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Widening Participation team by providing leadership to the whole team and direct line management to one member of the Widening Participation Team, aiming to:
·  distribute workload appropriately across the Team
·  maintain service standards and ensure compliance with relevant health and safety guidelines
·  monitoring workload and staff activity (for scheduling purposes)
·  manage HR-related activities (performance reviews, staff development etc.) / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / ·  Educated to degree level, or equivalent / ·  Teaching qualification or track record of working with or within education
Skills/Training / ·  Knowledge and understanding of widening participation issues, policies and good practice, including barriers to entry to higher education and how to address these
·  Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills and experience of working with a range of different people in different settings
·  Strong interpersonal, people management and motivational skills
·  Budget management and IT literacy / ·  Knowledge of the higher education sector and its links with pre and post-16 education
Experience / ·  Experience of planning, managing and running residential programmes for school age students
·  Experience of managing, organising and delivering events and cohesive programmes of activities
·  Strategic planning and project management skills, including the ability to monitor and evaluate on an ongoing basis
·  Experience of working with people with limited family or school /college history of progression to higher education
·  Experience of negotiating in-kind contributions from internal and external partners for joint events / ·  Experience of planning, managing and running university residential programmes
·  Experience in widening participation in a higher education context
·  Experience of developing programmes that will enrich academic learning and experience

Additional Information

The role collaborates proactively and productively with other areas within the University as well as with external groups and institutions.
The role’s strategic planning is subject to approval by the line manager. At the day-to-day operational level, the role operates with little guidance from the line manager.
This role works with students predominantly in post-16 education. It requires up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the University of Nottingham, the education sector and of developments in 14-19 qualifications, university admissions and the higher education environment generally.
A proportion of the role’s work is with the learners at the point of applying to university. The role’s work thus makes an important contribution to University targets for increasing the number of students from underrepresented backgrounds as well as general recruitment.
