Job Specification -FitnessInstructor

This post offers the opportunity to earn up to £7500 per annum for three morning’s work per week.

Qualifications/Experience

  1. We seek a flexible, personable, outgoing individual with good communication skills.
  2. He or she should be experienced in fitness instruction and gym supervision, and capable of designing individual exercise programmes for our members, to meet their needs and help them reach their goals.
  3. The successful candidate:
  4. will be solely responsible for supervising gym sessions.
  5. must be qualified to REPs level 3 for gym instruction and supervision, and personal instruction.
  6. must have a First Aid certificate or be willing to obtain one.
  7. a qualification to support exercise programme design for patients referred by local GPs, such as the level 3 instruction referral diploma, is desirable.
  8. 2 references will be required and will be taken up for the successful candidate.
  9. A DBS check will be required for the successful candidate. If necessary, the cost for the successful candidate will be met by the gym.

Hours of employment

  1. Part time: 3 X 5 hour sessions per week on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday mornings.
  2. Note these hours may change, subject to negotiation.
  3. The gym is routinely open on bank holidays with a few exceptions, like Christmas and New Year

New Victory Hall, Street Hill, Neatishead, Norfolk, NR12 8AD.

Nature of employment

  1. The instructor will be self-employed and provide his or her services to the gym under a contract (to be agreed). He or she will be responsible for his or her own tax, NI and pension arrangements.
  2. A job share may be possible.
  3. The candidate should indicate the hourly rate they expect for the work offered. The gym will pay for hours worked but not travelling time. The gym expects to pay a flat rate for all sessions irrespective of day if the week or whether there is a public holiday.The current rate is £10 per hour.
  4. The instructor:
  5. will comply with the policies of the gym, e.g. on anti-discrimination.
  6. will attend meetings and complete other duties as reasonably required. If additional attendance is required outside of the normal gym opening hours, for example for meetings, the gym will pay the normal hourly rate. Payment for travelling expenses for non-routine attendance is negotiable.
  7. will prepare reports that may reasonably be required. If this requires time outside the normal paid hours, the Instructor may make a case for the hours for any extra work to be paid.
  8. will attend the AGM and if requested EGMs that may be called. The Gym will pay the standard hourly rate.
  9. may comment on and make recommendations about the equipment or the way in which the Gym is run.
  10. may make any suggestions that might benefit the Gym and its members.
  11. will execute daily duties as listed below. These duties may be varied from time to time by mutual agreement.

Instructor duties

The instructor is the public face of the gym and should be polite, friendly, enthusiastic and encouraging at all times, motivating members and helping them to achieve their goals. There are specific responsibilities:

  1. Setting up and taking down. The instructor will:
  2. open up the hall and take all equipment out of the storage room and into the hall (the storage room opens onto the hall).
  3. check inventory and check each item of equipment for faults and report immediately or within 24 hours (depending on severity) any concerns to the committee by text, email or phone call.
  4. take any faulty or dangerous equipment out of service.
  5. turn on the sound system.
  6. complete an Instructor’s Session Record form for each occasion the gym is open.
  7. inform the relevant committee member if gym paperwork or publicity materials are running low.
  8. ensure all notices provided by the gym committee are displayed and brought to the attention of members.
  9. hand out newsletters and keep a record of who has received a copy. Hand out any other printed material that the committee wish to distribute.
  10. return equipment to storage at the end of each session.
  11. ensure the storage cupboards are locked, sound system is turned off, internal door keys are returned to the key cupboard, all windows and external doors are closed and the alarm is set before leaving the New Victory Hall.
  1. For members, the instructor will:
  2. ensure new members fill out a PAR-Q form, do a blood pressure check on the new member and hand out a membership card, a copy of the gym rules and a standing order form.
  3. receive payments from members in the form of cash or cheques and provide a written receipt. Keep a note on each receipt of the member’s number and the nature of the sale.
  4. carry out a gym induction for new members and produce an individual exercise programme.
  5. spend time with each member (suggested minimum 5 minutes of their session) as they exercise, checking that they understand the purpose of the exercise, are doing it properly and that they are generally satisfied.
  6. be constantly vigilant, watching members as they exercise and correcting any incorrect use of equipment or technique. Anticipate members’ problems. Some members may be reluctant to ask directly for help.
  7. ensure each member’s programme is reviewed periodically. Discuss with members what new goals they want to achieve and update their programme appropriately. If no new goals, rotate and vary exercises to give a balanced exercise regime over the months and years.
  8. pass on members’ comments or complaints to the committee (comment/complaint forms are available).
  9. actively work to encourage retention and recruitment of members.
  1. Equipment and venue. The instructor should:
  2. be aware of any dangers or hazards in the hall. In the event of an accident, the instructor will record in the Accident Book the date and time of the event, the people involved with contact details, and a brief description of what happened.
  3. during quiet times, clean equipment. Attempt to clean each piece of equipment at least once a week.
  4. know the building evacuation procedure.

Background information

Neatishead Community Gym is a non-profit organization managed by a committee of volunteers. We have around 80 members the majority of whom are over fifty.We pride ourselves on our supportive and friendly ethos and atmosphere.

Our equipment currently includes 4 bikes, 2 treadmills, 3 rowers, a cross-trainer, balls, steps, bands, hand weights, etc. The instructor will report to a designated member of the committee or his/her deputy.

The New Victory Hall in Neatishead is a light, airy and very pleasant environment in which to work. The building has been built using ecologically friendly and efficient buildings methods, including straw bales and lime render. It is heated using a ground source heat pump and has solar PV panels to generate electricity. There is ample free parking.
