Senior Accountant – Pensions
Shared Service Centre| Finance
Grade: PO6
Salary: £42,450 to £45,213
Role Purpose:
  • Provision of accounting and reporting services for the pension fund
  • Instruct fund managers and custodian on pension fund activity
  • Preparation of pension fund annual accounts
  • Support to the Pensions Committee
  • Provision of information to the Scheme Actuary

Main Specific Responsibilities:
  • Maintaining up to date general ledge for the pension fund.
  • Preparation of Pension Fund annual accounts and notes thereto.
  • Provide reports and advice to the Pensions Committee.
  • Liaising and instructing fund managers and the custodian on the settlement and funding of transactions.
  • Monitoring benefits and contribution activity ensuring reconciliations prepared and late payments of contributions are identified and collected.
  • Provision of information to actuary for valuation purposes.
  • Provision of periodic valuation, transaction and performance reports to officers, members and external parties, including government returns.
  • Processing of purchase invoices for pensions.
  • Take lead role in liaising with internal and external audit in respect of pension audits in line with the Council’s current audit protocols
  • Draft responses to FOI requests in respect of pensions issues and respond to enquiries in respect of the Pension Fund from external agencies.
  • Keep up to date with statutory and other regulatory change in respect of the LGPS.
  • To deputise as required for senior managers
  • To undertake any other temporary duties consistent with the basic objectives and duties of the post.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience (in addition to those on generic profile):
  • Degree level or equivalent qualification plus relevant experience.
  • Part qualification or membership of appropriate professional accounting or treasury body by examination e.g.CIPFA, or other CCAB body; or evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Experience of working at a middle management position in finance or treasury, with evidence of having advised senior management in financial management
  • Excellent communication and analyticalskills.
  • Ability to work with high level internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and good judgement in delivering service and Council aims and objectives
