Safe Work procedure:

Step / Description / Hazard / Controls
1 / Inspect working area. Be conscious of hazards such as clutter, spills, flammable materials or sources of ignition. / Trip, fall, slipping--Fire and or explosion-- / Practice good housekeeping - remove all clutter, flammable or combustible material. Note location of fire extinguisher/s and fire blanket/s.
2 / Vehicle must be on level ground, ignition off. If keys are in ignition, remember to roll down one of the windows. (Keys locked in vehicle). It is best to leave the keys on the front dash and not in the ignition. On a standard transmission the parking brake should be set. On an automatic transmission, parking brakes are not always set as they are not normally used over the life of the vehicle and if you set the brake it will most likely stick and not release. Use a hefty block against the tire that is diagonally opposite to the corner you want to lift. (i.e. If you are lifting the right rear corner of the vehicle, you must put a block ahead of but in contact with the left front tire.) / Vehicle may roll causing injury or death.--Vehicle may crash into vehicle ahead or behind it causing injury to others.-- / Be absolutely sure that the vehicle will not start or cannot roll during this step
3 / Use the jack according to the manufacturer's instructions. When lifting a vehicle make sure everyone is clear of the vehicle you are lifting. Lift the vehicle at the appropriate lifting/hoisting location to avoid damage to vehicle or injury to self and others. If you are not sure where to lift always ask instructor/teacher before proceeding any further. Remember jacks have weight load restrictions. Do not overload. / Jack can collapse if misused causing entrapment or crushing injuries. Vehicle can collapse causing injury if lifted in the wrong location. / Read and follow all instructions in manual and on labels for every jack. Use service manuals or manufacturer's information to determine proper lifting points on vehicle. Remember to make sure everyone is clear of the vehicle before jacking it up.
4 / Once the vehicle is jacked up enough, put safety stands underneath it to support the vehicle, (always use two of the same size safety stands). Ensure that safety stands are in the correct position, slowly lower the jack, if the vehicle shifts stop lowering the jack and cautiously determine why before proceeding. Do not go under the vehicle. If vehicle does not shift lower jack slowly to the ground, give the vehicle a shake to make sure it is secure on the safety stands before going underneath the vehicle. / If jack fails you could be crushed or killed. / Always use safety stands do not rely on a jack alone.
