Personal Assistants should be:
- Experienced in supporting a disabled person with their personal care.
- Reliable and trustworthy.
- Able to accept responsibility.
- Able to work independently and show initiative as required.
- Willing to learn the job well.
- Diligent and conscientious.
- Committed to equal opportunities in their attitudes and the way they carry out their work.
- Able to handle the physical tasks of lifting, handling, pushing and bending, unless otherwise stated. The Personal Assistant does not need to be physically strong to do certain tasks well, but it does help, together with good general health.
Personal Assistant Responsibilities
- Arrive at the agreed time ready to work.
- Give notice if you are going to be more than ten minutes late.
- Respect the privacy of the person you are working for and maintain a professional approach at all times, being careful to treat your working relationships as confidential, including the assistance provided.
- Understand and be mindful of the disabled persons right to dignity, respect and independence.
- Communicate and discuss any problems that arise as soon as possible.
- Respect your employer’s possessions and equipment and only use the telephone, television, radio, fridge etc with appropriate consent.
Job Description
A disabled man living in SW4 is looking for two Male PAs to work across the week from Monday to Sunday. The supporting duties include:
- Assisting from bed
- Bathing
- Supervising dressing
The PAs would also be expected to:
- Prepare breakfast
- Prepare lunch
- Prompt client to take medication
- Clean and tidy the bathroom and toilet
- Make the bed
The successful PAs should be punctual, flexible with time, friendly and a non-smoker.
The job is for 12 hours per week at £9.40 per hour. The breakdown of hours is as follows:
- Monday to Friday 1 hour in the morning and 30 minutes at lunchtime
- Saturday and Sunday 45 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at lunchtime
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday 30 minutes in the evening.

Personal Assistant Care Tasks may include:
- Getting in and out of bed.
- Dressing and undressing
- Washing and bathing/showering.
- Attention to hair, skin, nails, feet, eyes etc
- Transferring in and out of bed / wheelchair
- Using the toilet and dealing with continence management.
- Physiotherapy exercises
Personal Assistant Domestic and other Support Tasks may include:
- Food preparation and cooking meals.
- Support and household / domestic routines.
- Dealing with paperwork, bills and letters.
- Taking part in social / leisure activities and occasions.
Learning the task involved
The disabled person is the person best qualified to know what their needs are and how they are best met. For the most part therefore, areas of assistance can be learned and familiarised through the assistant and the disabled person working together. Where required, the employer will provide practical training and guidance.
