Curriculum Outline

Day 1 – Introductions, Goals, Resumes

Materials: Attendance Sheet, JRT BlueBook,Projector, pens/pencils. Copies:Resume worksheets.

  • Overall Class goal: “Prepare participants to secure and maintain employment.”
  • Required JRT competencies: Arrive on time, complete 5 days+ assignments.
  • Class Rules: Cell phones off. Housekeeping; Coffee, tea, water, restrooms, snacks ok.
  • JRT curriculum overview
Introductions – (optional--ice breaker)
  • Discuss Professional Goals: Long- short-term. Compare skills with labor market requirements. (Use O*NET as reference.)“What skills qualifications do you have to offer an employer?”
  • Resumes: Resume may reflect post-training skills orexisting skills for survival job. Brainstorm skills and qualifications. (resume books, O*NET online () for reference)
  • Help studentstocomplete Resume worksheet.

Instructors checkResume worksheetsfor completeness (dates, etc.); make corrections.

Day 2 –References, Applications

Materials – Copies: Referencesworksheets, Letter of Recommendationexample, sampleApplicationworksheets. (Cover Letters, when needed will be created by Case Manager)

  • References: 3 professional, 2 personal. Reference worksheets:Students complete as much as possible (at least the names). Worksheet may be taken home for phone #s if needed. Referencesmust be called for consent, before given to a potential employer.
  • Applications: Instructors guide line by line. Correct and make a copy for the file. Give the original to the client for Application cheat sheet. (If incomplete in class, complete at home and bring finished Application to Job Club to look over and make any necessary revisions)
Letters of Recommendation: Explain the importance of asking employers for a Letter of Recommendationbefore leaving a job. Sample Letter of Recommendation in BlueBook.

Day 3 – Work Behaviors, Budgets

Materials –Projector,(anyCommunity Resources material). Stressimportance responsibility of proofreading.Inappropriate Work Behaviors,Circles of Support, Good Job/Bad Job worksheets.

  • Discussion (Work Behaviors): What Barriers have students experienced in finding and keeping a job (internal and external)? List on the board.

Discuss Community Resources.Talk about calling 211 for assistance.Use projectoror share information found on website resources --

  • Budgets–Savings, necessity vs. luxury, values, long-term goals, etc. Encourage students to share strategies used to save money.
  • Class conversation about the benefits of Employmentvs. the effects a job may have on receiving TANF and other subsidies.
  • Work Behaviors – Professional expectations (may be different per employer)
  • American Work Behaviors vs.Work Culture of other countries (See American Work Culturelist – class should contribute other Cultural differences tobecome familiar with)
  • Unwritten Rules of the Workplace: Brainstorm on the board--Compare to Inappropriate Work Behaviors list (in BlueBook).
  • Optional: What do you consider a “Good Job” or a “Bad Job?” Everyone make a personal list. Share with the class - encourage group feedback.

Day 4 – Job Search Techniques, Internet, Retention

Materials – Copies: Employer Listworksheet, ORIA Job Search Log, Cold Call Script/30 60 Second Commercial

  • Brainstorm: How have people in the class found jobs? What methods work best? Compare to List of Job Search Techniques.
  • Networking. Who’s in your Network? Exercise: Ask each student to think of 3-5 Networking leads.
  • Cold Call:What isit? How to use the internet for cold call lists (or ask for assistance from your Case Manager). Find ~3 employer leads. (Case Managers do Follow up calls)
  • Cold Call Script: Develop a script for “30 - 60 second commercial.”
  • Job Search Logs: Must be turned in weekly.

Day 5 – Interviews and Graduation

Materials – Graduation Certificates (copy for the file). Copies: Interview Self-Evaluation,Interviewing Tips,Questions Employers Might Ask,What Not To Say in A Job Interview,Interview Questions You Should Ask,Would You Hire Yourself?

  • Class discussion about Interviewing, experiences they have had, etc.
  • Review What Not to Say.
  • Different types of interviews (1 on 1, phone, panel, etc.)
  • Each student list3 - 5good selling points. Each person share with the class. “Tell me about yourself…” (60 Second Commercial…)
  • Look over Questions Employers Might Askand discuss how to answer tricky ones.
  • ReviewInterview Questions You Should Ask.
  • Discuss Body language(Would You Hire Yourself?)
  • Short Mock Interview with each student.Feedback from class Instructor.
  • Award Graduation Certificates. Congratulate the Class!
