Job Context
Academic Development forms part of the Student and Academic Services Directorate, and is responsible for facilitating the widespread adoption of best practice with a focus on the development of staff excellence across all areas of academic practice including support for students.
Situated within Academic Development, the E-Learning Unit provides strategic direction for e-learning at QMUL and works to promote, support and develop technology-enhanced learning across the institution. It is responsible for institution-wide e-learning applications such as the online learning environment QMplus (based on Moodle and Mahara), Q-Review lecture capture (based on Echo360) and Turnitin for plagiarism detection.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to contribute to the enhancement of teaching and learning through technology. This involves working at faculty, school and staff levels on both strategic and operational aspects of e-learning ensuring that it is used effectively to enhance the student experience and QMUL teaching capabilities.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- To raise awareness across QMUL in the educational possibilities of learning technologies and identifying new opportunities where technologies can enhance learning and support distance, transnational and professional development programmes.
- To work closely with schools, institutes and faculties to ensure that e-learning services meet the educational needs of QMUL.
- To be a change agent, working with faculties and schools/institutes to help realise the QMUL E-learning Strategy.
- To lead on the communication and dissemination activities of the E-Learning Unit including maintenance of its web presence:
- Manage and run initiatives to promote engagement with e-learning across the college, including the development of effective communities (both online and offline) of learning technologists and e-learning practitioners; organisation of networking events; dissemination of news and good practice through different channels and in various formats utilising written, audio and video communications.
- Devise and implement marketing ideas to encourage the dissemination of effective practice in e-learning.
- To instigate and lead on the delivery of e-learning projects.
- To devise, develop, deliver, report on and evaluate educational development activities in e-learning, including teaching, assessing and observing on suitable masters-level modules.
- To contribute to develop policy, descriptions of service and usage guidelines around e-learning services for the QMUL community.
- To represent the E-Learning Unit on faculty e-learning user groups as required by the Head of E-Learning.
- To design and run training and development activities in e-learning including online and face-to-face workshops, sharing practice events and bespoke development sessions.
- To undertake any such other duties, including special projects, as may be requested by the direct line manager or Head of E-Learning.
