JOB SUMMARY

To support those affected by any type of brain tumour, by offering a holistic approach to support, information and guidance appropriate to the individual’s need. The support network uses a range of options including telephone and text, email, one-to-one meetings and group meetings.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•  Referral handling - Take initial referrals, undertake a Needs Assessment and where appropriate, refer to the BTS Counselling Service

•  Organise Support Groups - Organise and facilitate brain tumour support groups in the geographical area specified, including the booking of rooms and refreshments; booking of speakers; inviting and encouraging patients and families to attend

•  Information provision - Provide relevant national and local information to patients and families and keep up-to-date with the latest developments in treatments, support and information on brain tumours

•  On-going communication - Establish appropriate on-going communication and support with patients and families and keep the Head of Support regularly updated on contacts made and actions taken

•  Awareness raising - Raise awareness of the support available by distributing leaflets, attending appropriate meetings and visiting out-patients clinics at Wolverhampton and Queen Elizabeth hospitals on a regular basis

•  Database management - Collect contact data and ensure details are kept up-to-date on the central database

•  PR - Attend local meetings where issues affecting brain tumour patients are discussed and if required, to represent the charity through public speaking, delivering presentations and cheque collections

•  Relationship building - Build relationships with NHS professionals and key stakeholders in other organisations in the area who can offer support to our patient group

•  General Admin - Communicate effectively with head office to ensure that the service runs smoothly and that the database, website, publicity and fundraising materials are regularly updated

•  Volunteers - Encourage and develop volunteers to assist with the role in conjunction with the charity Volunteer Co-ordinator

•  Evaluation - Regularly review and evaluate the effectiveness of the support being offered

•  Miscellaneous - To undertake any other tasks appropriate to the role, including supporting colleagues with fundraising initiatives

Professional Conduct

To ensure professionalism in this role, the post holder will be expected to undertake continual professional development and to be a part of the charity's appraisal process and personal supervision requirements.

Confidentiality

The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients and their families, staff, volunteers and other charity business. The work is of a confidential nature and information gained must not be communicated to other persons except in the recognised course of duty.

Travel

The post holder will be expected to travel throughout the region specified and beyond if necessary to attend relevant meetings and to provide cover for neighbouring areas. Travel expenses will be paid according to the charities Travel Expenses Policy.

Flexibility

It is envisaged that the post holder will be required to work 20 hours over 3/4 days. However, a degree of flexibility is required as at times, those hours may fall between 8am and 9pm and may include weekends.
