COMPANY INTRODUCTION

Ecotope is a Seattle-based consulting and engineering firm with 30 years’ experience in the energy efficiency industry. Ecotope provides a range of services, including: technical research on energy use in buildings; energy program evaluation; energy code development and analysis; engineering design; and emerging technologies research. We conduct original research and analysis to understand how buildings use energy and how to effectively reduce that usage. We are deeply (some say obsessively) committed to quality research and our technical staff play a major role in our projects.

POSITION SUMMARY

Ecotope is recruiting for a combined Quantitative Analyst-Database Administrator position. The selected candidate’s expertise will help shape and define the role. The ideal candidate will act as data curator within Ecotope and be able to steer the big picture and long-termselection,preservation, maintenance, collection andarchivingof ourdataassets. The candidate will also act as a steward of real-time, incoming field data and related detail-oriented tasks. Typical work will involve establishing databases from incoming data streams and then analyzing the collected datasets. The analyst shouldhave experience in a research environment and be able to perform quantitative analysis on her/his own as well as take direction from senior staff to produce quality results. Generating, writing, and contributing sections of final reports for a client audience is also a function of this role. Other functions of this position include:

  • Using statistical software packages (i.e., STATA, R, SAS, etc.) and relational database tools (i.e., PostGres, MySQL, MS Access) on a daily basis.
  • Establishing and maintaining automated, batch processes on Linux machines.
  • Automating and testing incoming data streams for accuracy and consistency. Specifically, the candidate must be able to evaluate their data to make sure it is within reasonable bounds and shows up on time.
  • Working independently or with supervision to manage research projects and participate in research efforts, ensuring consistency and quality of research methods, conducting primary and secondary research.
  • Document findings visually and/or verbally for memos and reports to clients.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3 to 5+ years’ work experience in a similar or related field (graduate education may substitute).
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, statistics, physics, or engineering.
  • Expert data handling and database development, management, design and report development skills.
  • Expert level, hands-on data analysis experience using one or more of the following: C, C++, Java, SAS, SPSS, STATA, R, Python, MatLAB or similar. The successful candidate has extensive experience in custom programming for handling large datasets, and in database design, development, and deployment to a relational database platform.
  • Experience managing tasks or projects in an interdisciplinary environment including multiple players with varying personalities.
  • Strong initiative and ability to self-direct on assignments along with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including setting priorities and adapting to changes, in a time-sensitive, deliverable-driven workplace.
  • Some domestic (NW) travel may be required.

DESIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with sophisticated metering packages and related automated error checking and analysis.
  • Experience in a research environment a plus.
  • Experience with Linux and open-source tools a plus.
  • Strong writing skills including the ability to write in a variety of styles and translate technical information for general readers. Excellent oral communication skills also required.
  • Strong desire and interest in the energy efficiency and buildings field.

The salary range offered for this position will depend on the candidate’s experience. Ecotope offers a benefit package including medical, dental and vision coverage, IRA with matching contribution, annual profit-sharing bonuses, and annual paid vacation plus sick leave.
