DESCRIPTION

This is work maintaining highways, municipal and rural roads, airport runways, and rights-of-way. Duties include patching broken or eroded pavement, repairing guardrails, highway markers, and snow fences. Incumbents may also mow or clear brush from along road or plow snow from roadway.

Some positions in this occupation may be responsible for coordinating work and supervising employees.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises employees by assigning work, reviewing progress and assessing performance.

Erects, installs, and repairs guardrails, highway markers, button-type lane markers, using hand tools and power tools.

Dumps, spreads, and tamps asphalt, using pneumatic tamper to patch broken pavement.

Measures and marks locations for installation of markers, using tape, string, or chalk.

Drives tractor with mower attachment to cut grass.

Sets signs and cones around work area to divert traffic.

Blends compounds to form adhesive mixture, using spoon.

Verifies alignment of markers by sight.

Drives truck to transport crew and equipment to work site.
