Role and Goal: To hold the team accountable so that the Log Yard Team proactively manages log inventory, handles, sorts and preserves the quality of logs for its internal and external customers by effectively communicating in order to safely achieve productivity goals.

Objectives:

  1. Model and Maintain a Safe Working Environment (Safety)
  1. Always think and model safe work habits. Use common sense to avoid safety risks.
  2. Always wear proper safety protective equipment! This includes good hearing and eye protection when needed, and an orange vest when in the Log Yard at all times.
  3. Be pro-active in regard to keeping unauthorized personnel out of unsafe areas. Be assertive in warning others of the safety dangers in these areas.
  4. Ask for help when lifting heavy or awkward objects. Use proper lifting techniques when required.
  5. Follow all safety regulations and guidelines – be the role model for safety at all times. This would include using safe and proper lock out/tag out procedures when working on or around equipment.
  6. Be aware of safety dangers around all sawmill, log yard and rolling stock equipment.
  7. Be pro-actively involved in the Safety Program.
  8. Know and understand your role in the Log Yard Fire Plan.
  9. Model proper safety training and coaching when working with new operators.
  10. Provide Safety tours for new Log Yard employees.
  11. Maintain and keep all Log Yard Equipment in a safe working condition, including back up beepers(always look behind before backing up).
  1. Provide Leadership to the Log Yard Team
  1. Know, understand, and model C&D Lumber Co. Mission Statement.
  2. Be pro-active about suggesting alternatives or methods that help us meet any part of our Mission Statement.
  3. Monitor the types of logs we are putting into the mill and our log sorts and provide leadership, feedback, and direction to help the team meet C&D’s goals.
  4. Work with the Log Yard Team to provide the training, coaching, and feedback necessary to meet our quality standards and customer commitments.
  5. Take risks (other than related to safety issues) and learn from mistakes in a positive manner. Push yourself and the crew to create an environment where reaching our goals is exciting and challenging.
  6. Help maintain our log inventory management and accountability. This includes tracking all log flow, deck sorting, deck changes, deck maintenance, and hot logs.
  7. Be the conduit of information to/and from the Log Yard team and all other departments that will help them be accountable for reaching C&D’s goals.
  8. Assist in the shipping of logs to outside customers.
  9. Assist in preparing log tests.
  10. Be a resource to help scalers to understand our grades, sorts, and procedures.
  11. Developing good communication and leadership ability.
  12. Working long hours as needed.

  1. Model and Maintain Optimum QA and Customer Service
  1. Know, understand, and maintain all of our quality standards regarding the types of logs we need for our lumber products. (See QA Checklist for the Log Yard)
  2. Know and help maintain all of our log sorts with the given guidelines for each sort, and suggest changes as necessary.
  3. Be pro-active in our Quality Assurance program and be willing to settle for nothing less than our QA standards. (See QA Checklist for the Log Yard)
  1. Model and Maintain Optimum Productivity and Operating Efficiency in the Log Yard as Well as in Equipment
  1. Participates in the training and development of Log Yard Operators at C&D.
  2. Be pro-active and assertive in controlling non-value added time. This includes training and making others aware of different opportunities.
  3. Develop, maintain, and train others to use the preventative maintenance program for the Log Yard equipment.

Pre-start up check,

Warm-up timing,

Know what the normal condition is of each equipment,

Accurately judge what to do in abnormal conditions,

Know the safe operating capabilities and limitations of each piece of equipment

Know the Fire Plan for the backside of the sawmill.

4)Misc. equipment like the 920, D6 Dozer, water truck, splitter deck, and bucking logs.
