JOB DESCRIPTION: Youth Support Worker (Leader in Charge)

CONTRACT:Fixed term for 1 year

GRADE:JNC points 11 -14(JNC Level 3 qualified) or 7-10 (unqualified)

HOURS:18.5 hours per week

BASE:Bread Youth Project, 70 Ridingleaze, Lawrence Weston.

RESPONSIBLE FOR

Involvessupervisory responsibility for youth support workers, sessional staff and an expectation to support volunteers, peer educators and students on work experience placements.

JOB PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Youth Support Worker (Leader in Charge)is to assist in the smooth running of Lawrence Weston ‘Juicy Blitz’ Youth Project (JBYP) and/or Bread Youth Project delivery. This post will involve the development and delivery of informal education and personal and social development opportunities, with a specific focus on youth involvement and health related issues. The Youth Support worker (18.5hrs per wk) will work with other Youth Support Workers in the development of a range of creativelearning opportunities for young people, enabling them to develop a range of skills and capabilities. It is expected that this will involve working at least three evenings per week and could include weekends.

KEY DUTIES:

1. Directed work with Young People

  • Tobuild trusting and professional relationships with young people aged 11 – 25 years accessing Breads services.
  • To promote and encourage self-confidence, esteem and empowerment with young people attending the project.
  • To assist in working with young people to design, ensure the delivery of and evaluate a programme of educational, interactive and creative youth work, with a focus on health education and youth involvement issues.
  • To plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate youth work sessions and programmes in line with funder requirements and/or agreed outcomes.
  • To recruit new young people into the project activities, ensuring representation of young people from marginalised groups.
  • To support young leaders to organise and manage their own programmes of activity.
  • To support young people to reflect on their learning and achievements and distance travelled.
  • To facilitate and support young people attaining accreditation for their achievement at BREAD, such as the Youth Achievement Awards (YAA) or Asdan Short Course Awards.
  • To provide one to one support to young people with additional or complex needs
  • To contribute to the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the project.
  • To carry out risks assessment’s for activities and appropriate food safety and building checks.
  • To maintain the quality assurance of BREAD Youth Project’s youth work.

2. External Relationships

  • To liaise with youth workers, relevant agencies and professionals (Schools, Youth and Play Services and the Early Help Team) in order to expand the delivery of project activities complimenting work currently delivered within the community.
  • To develop outreach work for JBYP.
  • To liaise with parents, guardians, members of the community and teachers as appropriate.

3. Fundraising, Reporting and Publicity

  • To contribute to fundraising activities by supporting young people to complete applications for small grants.
  • To assist in the production of project reports
  • To assist the Manager in disseminating information and promoting the project.
  • To assist in ensuring that JBYP’s online presence is kept up-to-date.
  • To contribute to project reports as required within BREAD’s reporting systems.

4. Policies and Procedures

  • To operate within BREAD Youth Project’s policies and procedures.

OTHER

  • To undertake basic administrative tasks to support the project work.
  • Attend regular supervision/line management sessions with the designated Line Manager.
  • Attend training and development opportunities as identified and agreed by the Line Manager.
  • Attend Bread Board meetings where appropriate.
  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Undertake other duties as commensurate with the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
JNC Youth and Community Work qualification (e.g. Dip in Youth and Community work/NVQ Level 3) / Desirable
