Position: Development Associate

Reports to: Development DirectorDate:March 5, 2015

General description of position

The Development Associate provides support to the Development Director in the pursuit of all fund development activities, including membership, direct mail campaigns, website and others.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required

  • Understanding of basic fundraising principles and practices
  • Competence with DonorPerfect, WordPress and MS Office
  • Competence in grant writing and program administration
  • Ability to form strong relationships with donors and volunteers

Education and experience desired

  • 2-4 years experience in fundraising position required
  • Past experience in environmental organizations preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

Salary range

  • $35-40K with comprehensive benefits package

Working conditions

  • Standard 40 hour work week
  • Occasional night and weekend assignments

Perform: Primary tasks and areas of responsibility

  • Assist Development Director in all phases of program implementation
  • Manage organizational membership
  • Track up to ten grant applications or reports
  • Maintain fundraising area of website
  • Organize and manage donor and volunteer events
  • Maintain records for major donor program

Produce: Results and outputs expected of this role

  • Membership records are current
  • Outreach is accomplished according to annual calendar
  • Major donor tracking systems are up to date
  • Fundraising events are produced professionally
  • Information on website is current

Participate: Decision making authority

In implementation of this role, the following parameters of authority are in place to establish level of autonomy and decision making.

Independent Decisions (can make on own, without need for approval)

  • Design and maintenance of donor database
  • Routine communication with donors about membership issues

Dependent Decisions (must get supervisory approval to implement)

  • Style and content of website
  • Final edits of outbound communication concerning programs and events
  • Arrangements for donor events

Input Only (involvement in decision is limited to providing input)

  • Strategy with donors and events
  • Decisions on major suppliers and vendors
  • Integration of fundraising activities with programs and other staff

Plan: Strategy, budget and spending responsibility

  • Participates in strategic planning as directed
  • Assists Development Director in preparation of budget and related documents
  • Can spend up to $500 without approval
