Purpose of Job: Support teaching and learning, and the welfare of learners to ensure that the ‘Every Child Matters’ outcomes are reinforced throughout the school curriculum. Learners should: be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution to the community and achieve economic well being.

The duties may be varied to meet the changing priorities and needs of the school and at the reasonable discretion of the Principal and following consultation with you.

This job description describes the way the postholder is expected and required to perform and complete the particular duties set out below.

Principal accountabilities

  Ensure the maintenance of a clean, orderly and safe working environment, making sure that equipment/resources/materials are set out on time, as per instructions received, and used safely to enable pupils to meet their learning targets.

  Assist the teacher with learning activities, ensuring health and safety and good behaviour of pupils (including off-site activities such as trips, swimming, inclusion etc.). Support the pupils in accessing learning activities as directed by the teacher to enable pupils’ progress towards their targets. Be aware of and support differences to ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.

  Assist with the supervision of pupils and students during break times, ensuring the health and safety and good behaviour of all. This may include specific duties with regard to play areas, a more active play activity, or even a dinner time club.

  Provide clerical/admin support (e.g. typing, photocopying, display, collection and recording of money etc) and undertake basic record keeping in respect of pupil learning, behaviour management, child protection etc.

  Liaise with therapists, when directed, in order to support the teacher to deliver the specific learning programmes set for each child.

  Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person to ensure pupils’ wellbeing.

  Contribute to the overall work/aims of the school and appreciate and support the role of colleagues and other professionals to enable the school to fulfil its development plans etc.

  Undertake training and other learning activities and attend relevant meetings (within contracted hours) as required to ensure own continuing professional development.

  Attend to pupils’ personal medical care needs following appropriate training. (This may include administering valium, administering oxygen, catheterisation, administering regular medication as prescribed by a GP or consultant). (This will apply to all substantive posts from September 2006, and to all staff already trained. For staff on a substantive contract before September 2006, and not already trained, these tasks would be on a voluntary basis.)

  Assist with the organisation of refreshments and mealtimes (this may include feeding pupils by gastric tube following appropriate training) to ensure pupils’ wellbeing and health and safety.

  Implement, as directed, behaviour management programmes for pupils with severe learning and/or emotional problems, to ensure that the wellbeing, health, safety and learning needs of all pupils are met.

  Provide support for the class teacher and colleagues in the manual handling and/or physical restraint of pupils, to ensure that pupil wellbeing, health and safety is maintained.

  Assist with the development of hygiene, toilet training and general dressing programmes.

  Supervise the arrival and departure of pupils at the beginning and end of the school day. (Subject to contracted hours)
