Purpose of the Job

To work within the Swale District to promote excellence in Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) practice. To lead the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service by:

  • Carrying out general and specific duties as set out by the National School Teacher’s Pay and Conditions.
  • Leading, along with senior colleagues every aspect of the MIDAS Centre.
  • Providing co-ordinated management for specialist teachers, special school advisers, outreach staff and SEN specialist staff within the Swale District (and when requested across County.)
  • Facilitating local planning and decision making processes,for example LIFT, EYFS, LIFT SCARF
  • Providing specialist expertise, quality assurance and monitoring of specialist intervention, for children and young people (CYP) with SEND (0-19/24) within the district.
  • Providing specialist expertise across the district and making a contribution to specific projects and initiatives in relation to Government and County initiatives.
  • To work with the leadership and management team in the leadership and management of the school.
  • To work according to the principles of the STLS SLA and the Special School Outreach SLA.
  • To lead on an aspect of Meadowfield’s Strategic Improvement Plan.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Principal in developing, implementing and monitoring district initiatives for CYP (0-19/24) with SEND.
  1. To promote the vision, values and strategic direction of Meadowfield School as a member of the Senior Management Team.
  1. Manage the Swale district team of specialist teachers and SEN specialist staff with a range of specialisms.
  1. Leading, along with senior colleagues every aspect of the MIDAS Centre.
  1. Provide highly specialised SEND expertise and leadership to support specialist staff.
  1. Liaise with multi-agency colleagues to support complex case management.
  1. Provide appraisal and supervision to a district team of specialist teachers and SEN specialist staff.
  1. Work in partnership with Private, Voluntary and Independent (PVI) settings, Profound, Severe and Complex (PSC) pre-school provisions, schools with mainstream resourced provision, mainstream and special school to promote and facilitate the development of inclusive practices in order to raise the achievement, attainment and progress of CYP with SEND.
  1. Monitor and evaluate the impact of interventions and their contribution to the achievement, attainment and progress of CYP.
  1. Contribute to the interpretation of data to provide appropriate information which is disseminated and supported by appropriate specialist strategic advice, to facilitate local planning and interventions.
  1. Contribute specialist knowledge and expertise to local and county planning and decision making processes in respect of CYP with SEND including representing the district at meetings.
  1. Provide monitoring and evaluation of interventions and support for CYP focusing on their contribution to attainment, achievement and progress.
  1. Work with professional colleagues on the development and delivery of specialist CPD and contribute to specialist workforce development.
  1. Promote opportunities for CYP to be actively involved in decisions affecting them.
  1. Promote the involvement of parents and carers in decisions and interventions involving their CYP, in line with new COP.
  1. Support integrated working to ensure coherent and consistent multi-professional interventions for children and young people, working strategically and collaboratively with other agencies within Swale and beyond.
  1. Maintain records and data; manage information and record communications through the use of appropriate ICT.
  1. Undertake continuous professional development, updating personal specialist teaching knowledge, skills and expertise in order to raise the standard of CYP’s achievement.
  1. Develop personal competencies in line with National SEN Standards, National Standards for SEN Outreach Services.
  1. To participate actively and effectively in professional supervision and performance management processes.

Strategic Direction and Development of the School:

To work with the Principal, Senior Leaders and Governors to develop a strategic view for the school and its services in the community and analyse and plan for its future needs and future development within the local, national and international context.

To lead and manage the development, maintenance, monitoring and review of the STLS including Meadowfield Outreach. This will include close scrutiny of the provision of services to CYP, auditing individual needs, collaboration with other schools and negotiating with other authorities and institutions, managing the day to day operations, keeping detailed records and ensuring effectiveness and value for money.

To take a leading role in School Improvement and the School Self Review process with particular reference to the Meadowfield STLS.

Leading and Managing

Take responsibility for specific aspects of the leadership, motivation, support, challenge and recruitment development of STLS staff in order to secure improvement.

To be strong and unified, with the whole team founded on clarity of purpose, embracing full accountability for achievement, and a ‘can do’ innovative culture that distributes responsibility boldly and celebrates and rewards success.

To motivate and maximise the contribution and confidence of all STLS team members to continuously improve performance and igniting the enthusiasm and ambition of CYP to learn and achieve to their full ability.

To lead and manage a team of STLS colleagues in developing strategies to put agreed policy into practice.

To be engaging and collaborative, building effective relationships with colleagues, CYP, parents, other professions and the community.

Accountability

Assist the Principal in accounting for the efficiency and effectiveness of the work of the STLS to the governors and all stakeholders.

Provide information, reports and support to the governing body to enable it to meet its responsibilities in regard to those outlined in the STLS and Outreach Service SLAs.

The deployment of the post holder will be within the Swale District but will require travel across a wider area for the professional element of the role.

Qualifications /
  • The post holder must have Qualified Teacher Status or equivalent with a thorough understanding of current classroom practice in a range of educational settings
  • The post holder must have one or more specific, relevant advanced specialist professional qualification/s

Experience /
