Role Title: Reprographic Operator

Reporting to: Reprographic Manager

Salary: £14,992 - £17,340 per annum

Role purpose:

Providing specific Reprographic services to external & internal customers of the Library.This is a specialist role, which works at an operational level to deliver & support Imaging Services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Digital Imaging

Publishing Quality Digital Imaging

Preservation friendly high-end digital imaging suitable for publishing. Utilising the latest digital camera technology and software to produce hi-res colour accurate images at 1:1 scale for the NLS digital archive and for customer orders.

Reference Quality Digital Imaging

Preservation friendly low resolution images for reference purposes. Utilising digital camera technology, compression and OCR software to produce PDF images with searchable text for customer orders.

Large Format Digital Scanning

High-end digital imaging of single sheet material. Utilising the latest sheet-fed digital scanner to produce hi-res detailed digital images for the NLS digital archive and colour printing for customer orders.

Design & Digital Manipulation

Design includes production of original artwork and formatting of existing artwork via the latest desktop publishing software. Work includes posters, flyers, certificates, invites and signage. Digital Manipulation requires images to be enhanced, colour corrected, re-sized, stitched and cloned utilising the latest photographic software to meet the required standard for outputting purposes.

  • Preservation Printing / Office copying

Printing out images from various different electronic file formats using high speed digital networked copiers and printers.

Digital Toner Printing

Preservation friendly colour and black & white printing. Utilising digital camera technology to produce colour accurate digital images, enhanced and batch printed through printer friendly photographicsoftware to networked toner based printers.

Large and Small Format Colour, Black & white Inkjet printing

High-end colour inkjet based printing for facsimiles and posters, and black & white printing. Printing from hi-res digital images via printer friendly photographic software, or from original material sheet-fed through a networked scan to print system.

In-house Colour / Black & White Printing, & Print Finishing

Meeting all the reprographic needs of the Library for signage, learning, conferences, web, retail and exhibitions. Work is printed via networked printers and guillotined, folded, laminated, heat-sealed, or wire bound as necessary.

  • Preservation Microfilming

Microfilming

Microfilming produced to the highest preservation standards. Utilising the latest 35mm microfilming cameras and black & white chemical processes to produce the recognised industry standard for archiving of valuable material for the NLS and for customer orders. This includes the PH acetate film based deterioration tests of the Library’s microfilm collections, conducted randomly and on a quarterly basis. This is to ensure microfilms within the NLS are inspected for chemical acid deterioration and to judge if the NLS microfilm collections are stored in optimum conditions for preservation of the collections.

Maintaining and updating the Reprographics Units various statistical databases.

Skills, abilities and knowledge

Essential

  • An excellent knowledge of Photography, particularly Digital Photography, is required. You will be required to use state of the art Digital Cameras and Scanners, with the ability to set the equipment to produce the optimum exposure / image within studio type conditions to meet NLS Digitisation Standards.
  • A working knowledge of Imaging / Design software would be required for the necessary output and manipulation of Digital Images. Examples of software would be; Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and CaptureOne.
  • A working knowledge of wet photography would be required to complete the processing techniques for Microfilming.
  • An understanding of colour balancing for the various colour printing methods employed by the Reprographic Unit would be required. An attention to detail and ability to maintain quality control standards and problem solving skills would also be necessary.
  • Experience in working directly with the public, specifically dealing with requests and enquiries, and having a creative approach to service delivery.
  • Excellent team-working skills, including the ability to work with teams outside the department.
  • Ability to cope with a wide variety of tasks and changing priorities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail.

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in a similar role in the imaging services sector.

Desirable

  • Work experience in a Reprographic, Design, or Photographic environment, or a qualification to the level of 6/7 within the National Qualification Framework, in a Photographic, Reprographic or Design based discipline. Specifically, qualifications in Photography that cover both Digital and traditional methods and / or a qualification in Design / Imaging utilising computer based techniques.

Status:Permanent post.

Hours:Full-time- 37 hours per week, excluding lunch breaks. The flexible working hours system will apply to this post. The post holder must be prepared to work flexibly as reasonably required.

Annual Leave:There is an annual leave allowance of 26.5 days rising to 31.5 days after five years’ service (pro-rata for part-time staff). Leave can only be taken with the approval of the appropriate line manager. In addition, you will receive 10 days public and privilege holidays.

Pension:Library staff are eligible to join the Civil Service pension arrangements. You can choose between:

1. nuvos. This is an occupational pension scheme that currently has a percentage member contribution rate. As your employer, we meet the rest of the cost of the scheme.

2. partnership pension account. This is a stakeholder pension with a contribution from the Library. How much we pay is based on your age. We pay this regardless of whether you choose to contribute anything. You do not have to contribute but if you do, we will also match your contributions up to 3% of your pensionable earnings. The contributions are in addition to the age related contributions mentioned above.

There are arrangements for transferring pension rights to and from other pension schemes, and for increasing scheme benefits by the payment of additional voluntary contributions.

Certificate:Part V of the Police Act 1997 introduced a new system of disclosing criminal history information to individuals and organisations for employment and other purposes. There are three levels of Disclosures: Basic, Standard and Enhanced. The level required for employment with the Library is Basic Disclosure which provides details of any unspent convictions or states that there are no criminal convictions.
