Job Description – Music Therapist

Post:Music Therapist 0.3 FTE

Responsible to:Headteacher

Job Vacancy:

Sandside Lodge School is a school for 80 students aged 2-19 years with a diagnosis of Severe Learning Difficulties based in Ulverston. We are looking to appoint a qualified Music Therapist following the successful application for a Children In Need Grant for the next three years (continued funding permitted)The grant will allow us to employ a Music Therapist for approximately one and a half days a week to be based at the school.

Main Duties:

  • To assess individual studentsand ascertain their needs.
  • To deliver a music therapy programme tailored to students’ bespoke needs.
  • To provide music therapy services in fulfilment of therapeutic objectives, including but not limited to, anxiety reduction, self-esteem, improved quality of life, communication, expressionof self and wider student support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate skills in assessment ofmusic therapy.
  • Clear knowledge of professional ethics.
  • Clear understanding ofclinical supervision process.
  • Ability to implement necessary change related to music therapy and find innovative ways to deliver improvements.

Personal attributes:

  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Clear awareness of specific student-appropriate working relationship.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional responsibilities:

  • To prepare reports on students as required, and to keep accurate records of sessions undertaken.
  • To maintain good standards of practice and personal professionalism in order to create an effective therapeutic environment.
  • To undertake other dutieswhich may arise, as deemed appropriate.

Inclusion:

  • Ensure all students can access music therapy if deemed appropriate in line with their individual needs.

Health and Safety:

  • Have up-to-date, relevant safeguarding training.
  • Awareness of child protection issues and school protocol.
  • Ensure all aspects of health and safety areadhered to in line with the school’s policy and procedures.

Liaison with other stakeholders:

  • Promote effective links with parents/carers.
  • Form good working relationships with school staff and other professionals.

Promoting/supporting the School:

  • Attend relevant meetings as appropriate.
  • Raise the profile of the school locally, regionally and nationally within the realms of music therapy.
  • Complete detailed case studies to submit to Headteacher and Children In Need.
  • Contribute to annual report to show how Children In Need funding has been used effectively and efficiently.

Professional Competency:

  • Maintain own professional development and competency in accordance of the role of a Music Therapist.
  • Are committed to continuous professional development related to their subject area and the specific needs of pupils in school.
  • Be aware of current professional issues.
  • Keep up to date with new and current trends in music therapy and associated therapies.
  • Be motivated to learn/develop professionally.
