The most important quality the Trust is looking for is a skilled Youth & Community Worker. Whilst an understanding of the Jewish community is important, we can provide appropriate training if it is lacking.

The main responsibility of the Youth Worker will be delivery of youth work provision for those aged 8 to 19.

Job Description

Job Title:South Manchester Jewish Community Youth Worker

Grade:Commensurate with Joint Negotiating Committee for Youth and Community Workers, ProfessionalRange (£26,000 to £30,000 pro rata).

Employment:The employing body is the South Manchester Jewish Youth Trust. JNC Conditions of Service will apply. The number of working hours per week will be 18.75 comprising five sessions of which a session is a morning, afternoon or evening. The nature of the work involves unsociable hours. It is expected thatat least three sessions per week should be evenings. Holiday entitlement is 15 days.

Managerial responsibility:The Community Youth Worker will be directly accountable to a DedicatedSupervisor appointed by the Youth Trust Management Committee on a day to day basis and ultimately responsible to the Management Committee.

The Community Youth Worker will be responsible for the professional management of any youth workers, instructors or volunteers working on projects, events or activities for young people as well as professional supervision of the Co-ordinator for work with under 12s. They will also be responsible for the management of any Administrative Staff.

Purpose of the post:To ensure a comprehensive youth service to cater for the whole range of needs of Jewish young people within South Manchester and the surrounding areas and, specifically, to support a curriculum which allows for those young people to build friendships and develop a strong social and Jewish identity both as individuals and groups.

Curriculumresponsibilities:

a)Ensure a full and balanced curriculum relevant to the aims of the South Manchester Jewish Youth Trust;

b)Support and initiate activities, projects, outings and events, delivering informal, social education for Jewish young people in South Manchester;

c)Provide opportunities for interaction with the wider, secular community of the city and with other Jewish youth around the UK and abroad;

d)Identify and explore alternative settings and styles of delivering a Jewish Youth Work curriculum;

e)Implement an appropriate volunteer leadership training programme;

Delivery of curriculum:

a)Carry out outreach work, visiting the places young people frequent, identifying and responding to their developmental needs;

b)Undertake research, where necessary, to identify needs of young people;

c)Support and develop Jewish youth groups in the area, offering advice, assistance and resources where appropriate and identifying priorities for future work;

d)Encourage the participation of young people in all aspects of curriculum planning and implementation and the Youth Trust Management Committee;

e)Work with young women and young men involved in the programmes in groups or, where appropriate, on a one-to-one basis;

f)Initiate projects in conjunction with Jewish Schools and input into Jewish assemblies in non-Jewish schools;

g)Participate in relevant local area youth workers' meetings, Jewish Representative Council meetings, B’Yachad B’Tsafonand other groups as appropriate;

h)Effectively publicise the programme of youth activities in South Manchester;

i)Ensure that at all times the curriculum reflects no discrimination on the grounds of gender, colour, nationality, disability or wealth and that the value of equality of opportunity is a fundamental element of the youth work curriculum.

Other duties:

a)Take responsibility for the management of administration;

b)Provide relevant information to the Youth Trust Management Committee to support their fund-raising for youth programmes;

c) Attend meetings of the Youth Trust Management Committee as required and report to them on all aspects of work undertaken. The Community Youth Worker will be expected to keep regular recordings and evaluate their work and present a comprehensive, written report to the Annual General Meeting of the South Manchester Jewish Youth Trust;

d)Monitor, maintain and update records and information on all age groups of young people in the community;

e)Undertake any other duties assigned by the Youth Trust Management Committee, commensurate with the responsibilities of the post.

Staff Development

The Community Youth Worker will be expected to organise their own programme of personal and professional development, in conjunction with the Management Committee, by making use of appropriate training courses and seminars.

Induction

The Community Youth Worker will participate in a period of induction, as agreed with the Management Committee.

Appraisal

The Community Youth Worker will participate in setting their objectives in agreement with the Supervisor and, subsequently, in a formal annual appraisal.

Review of Job Description

This job description is subject to review. The Management Committee shall ensure that opportunity for review is available at least annually.
