Job Description for: Director of Business Development

Location
Central office in Kennington / Hours per week
35 / Salary: c£45K
AIM / To ensure continuing and expanding income for Welcare from statutory and voluntary sources, in order that Welcare can maintain its current work; develop new services for families and children; and gradually reduce its reliance on statutory funding.
The post holder is accountable to the Chief Executive of Welcare who is responsible to the Trustee Board of Welcare for the performance of the agreed duties.
RESPONSIBILITY / To hold responsibility for income generation in Welcare through high quality tendering and trust fund applications; the development and expansion of key relationships; the maintenance and expansion of the supporter base; and effective marketing and communication of Welcare's activities.
GENERAL DUTIES / Strategic and business planning
  1. Take an active role in the strategic and business planning processes at Welcare, working closely with the Chief Executive and the senior management team.
  1. Support service and team managers in undertaking annual business planning for their services and activities working within the parameters of the recent Welcare Strategic Review & liaising with the Director of Services about any plans for new services or activities.
  1. Working alongside other members of the senior team, to give leadership to Welcare in implementation of the recommendations of Welcare's strategic review.
Income Generation and tendering
  1. With assistance from the Director of Services, Service Managers and members of the Income Generation and Resources team, write and co-ordinate tenders for statutory work.
  1. To ensure that all tenders and applications for services submitted are of a high standard
  1. Project Manage all tenders for statutory work on behalf of Welcare ensuring time schedules are adhered to.
  1. Ensure that the services described in tenders and applications are in line with Welcare’s vision, mission, values and strategy review.
  1. Ensure that tenders and applications are appropriately constructed so that high quality and financially viable services can be provided.
Business Development
  1. Monitor the promotion of new tenders in Welcare's sphere of work and geographical area of operation, and identify suitable opportunities for Welcare to apply for.
  1. Liaise with the Chief Executive to identify partnership possibilities or strategic alliances and to negotiate consortia or sub contracting arrangements.
  1. Build highly effective relationships with key external partners, funders, policy makers and commissioners
Fundraising
  1. Ensure that the budgeting process is carried out in Welcare by the in house or outsourced finance team and managers; identify funding gaps; and with the Chief Executive set fundraising targets for projects.
  1. Research and identify Trusts to whom Welcare can apply for funding, and project manage major trust applications.
  1. Working with the Director of Services and Service Managers, write larger trust applications and assist them in writing smaller, more local applications.
  1. Develop the supporter base of Welcare especially amongst local communities and churches.
Marketing and communications
  1. Hold responsibility for the marketing of Welcare services and the production of appropriate materials including the website.
  1. Ensure that an effective data base of supporters is kept and updated, and that all supporters receive regular communications about Welcare's work.
  1. Ensure that local Welcare supporter groups are well serviced in terms of publicity and ideas for events, and encourage volunteer involvement in local fundraising.
Staff management and supervision
  1. Directly lines manage and provide leadership and regular supervision to the Income Generation and Resources team.
  1. With the Human Resources Manager, manage the employment of staff in projects and services in accordance with relevant policies and procedures, to include:
  1. Recruitment, induction, appraisal and training of members of staff
  2. Investigation of grievances, complaints and disciplinary matters
Policies and procedures
  1. Ensure compliance with all Welcare policies and procedures.
  1. Commit to and promote the implementation of Welcare’s Equal Opportunities Policy and anti-discriminatory practices.
  1. Ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act.
General
  1. Assist the Chief Executive in preparation of agendas for the Fundraising and Marketing Committee and attend Committee meetings.
  1. Attend finance committee meetings as required.
  1. Prepare quarterly reports to the Board and attend meetings of the Board as required.
  1. Attend regular supervision and appraisal with the Chief Executive Officer.
  1. Contribute experience, knowledge and skills to the organisation through attending and participating in the Strategic Management Team, Middle Managers’ Meeting, and Staff Development Days.
  1. In conjunction with the Strategic Management Team, provide out of hours cover for Welcare when services are operating.
  1. Undertake training as agreed to keep abreast of current trends and to extend management and professional skills.
  1. Undertake other tasks identified by the Chief Executive Officer appropriate to the role.
