Job description for Chief Executive

Role of the Chief Executive

  • To be responsible for the overall strategic management, leadership and development of Together for Short Lives. The Chief Executive is the most senior staff position and carries significantly devolved responsibilities from the Board of Trustees to achieve the organisation’s overall aims and to progress development
  • To work with the Chair and Board of Trustees to develop a vision for the future of the Charity, involving key stakeholders, particularly staff and to be responsible to the Board for the operational delivery of the strategy ensuring that the organisation is responsive to the changing external environment.
  • To provide effective leadership to the organisation
  • To develop and maintain strong and effective working relationships with key stakeholders to ensure best possible outcomes for children’s palliative care
  • To be responsible for staff leadership, management and administration of the organisation in the execution of the Board’s policies
  • To increase awareness of the work of Together for Short Lives and reputation management to ensure maximum input into developments in the sector and to maximise funding opportunities.
  • To foster a culture of openness, challenge, learning and development for the charity and employees.
  • To be a role model of the values and behaviours adopted by the charity.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leading and Managing the Organisation

  • To work with the Chair and the Board to ensure that a clear vision is set for the future of the charity, put clarity around that vision and manage its communication both internally and externally to ensure that all stakeholders, but particularly employees, understand the strategy and achieve a real sense of engagement with the Charity
  • To be responsible to the Board for the implementation of the strategic plan
  • To enable the organisation to articulate its corporate philosophy and values and ensure that these are consistently applied across the organisation including at Board level
  • To develop and maintain strong organisational structures both in terms of financial health and staffing structures
  • To be responsible to the Board of Trustees for the overall financial health of the organisation, ensuring that expenditure is controlled in line with budgets as approved by the Board.

2. Governance

  • To ensure effective processes and procedures exist for the safe and secure expenditure of funds consistent with charitable objectives.
  • To ensure appropriate presentation and reporting to the Board of Trustees on the progress of Together for Short Lives and on all matters relating to the discharge of its responsibilities
  • As agreed with the Chair, to develop policy proposals for Board discussion and decision
  • To support the Chair in ensuring the continued engagement and involvement of all members of the Board and in the process of self assessment and development
  • To ensure the annual calendar of Board meetings and sub committees is in place
  • To ensure the organisation meets its constitutional, regulatory and legal obligations.

3. Promotion of the Charity and Fundraising

  • To maintain effective networks with all key stakeholders and work with the Chair and Trustees in the promotion and development of these relations including Government and Shadow Ministers, relevant Government officialsand associated agencies, hospices, and families, other voluntary organisations and sponsors
  • To seek opportunities to expand and promote the role of the organisation
  • To ensure the organisation is presented in an appropriate and professional manner to its stakeholders and is always seen in the best possible light.
  • To promote the objectives of the Charity and influence key stakeholders in the development of children’s palliative care including ensuring an input into policy developments affecting the sector
  • To act as the main spokesperson for the Charity
  • To ensure an effective strategy is in place to grow income generation.
