2 medical (1 at BHH, 1 at GHH) and 3 surgical (2 at BHH and 1 at GHH) teaching posts

Seniority level: minimum of 2 years post graduation training

Objectives

This is a one year post aimed at junior or middle grade doctors with some clinical experience and an established interest in Medical Education. It will provide a positive step towards a career/special interest in Medical Education.

The primary objectives are:

  • Delivery of undergraduate medical student teaching
  • Research into undergraduate education in clinical settings, leading to publication/presentation of findings.
  • Development of teaching skills and completion of Certificate in Medical Education
  • Some clinical work to maintain skills and contribute to objectives above

The Hospitals

Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH), Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and Solihull Hospital make up Heart of England Trust Clinical Teaching Academy; teaching hospitals of the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, University of Birmingham. Medical students from years 3, 4, and 5 are attached to the Academy for the following modules:

3rd year Integrated Medicine and Surgery

4th year Specialty medicine

Specialty surgery

5th yearObstetrics & Gynaecology

Paediatrics

The Acutely ill patient

Assistantship

Career taster

Student numbers vary during the academic year to a maximum of 145 students on one site. The Education Fellow posts are established to assist with the delivery of Undergraduate teaching within this setting and also to look at ways of improving and developing teaching and learning in the Academy.

Personal Development

The postholders will be supported in their personal development in research and education. The postholder will be supported to complete a Certificate in Medical Education, supervision for this will be provided by the Head of Clinical Teaching Academy.

General Provision

Location

The postholder will be based at either Heartlands or GoodHopeHospital but may be required to work across any of the 3 sites.

Job Plan

Upon appointment the postholder will agree a job plan with the Head of Clinical Teaching Academy which will reflect roughly1/2 time teaching,1/2 time research & teaching preparation. There may be a possibility for limited clinical sessions to support teaching and maintain skills.

The postholder will be responsible to the Head or Associate Head of Clinical Teaching Academy. They will work closely with the undergraduate team within the Academy. In addition they will be accountable to consultants to whom they are attached for clinical work.

Responsibilities

Teaching

To deliver and develop clinical undergraduate medical student teaching according to requirements of the College of Medical and Dental Sciences. This may include teaching in modules from years 3, 4 and 5 of the curriculum.

Administration/Audit/Managerial

To liaise with the undergraduate administrative staff at the Trust and MedicalSchool personnel as appropriate. Contribute to the development of audit of teaching and learning at the Trust.
