Context / Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW), a youth-led international development agency currently working in Africa and South Asia, has doubled the size of its operations and reach of its programmes in the past three years. SPW’s innovative youth-led development model has been repeatedly cited as a model of best practice by the World Bank, UNICEF, UNAIDS and others, and SPW was the recipient of the 2007 STARS Impact Award for Education.
Alongside SPW’s programmatic work in Africa and Asia, SPW’s International Programmes Unit is working with young people in the developed world, international decision makers and youth-led and youth-focused organisations worldwide to increase the scope and impact of SPW’s work. The International Programme Unit has an exciting 3 year strategy in place with ambitious objectives focusing on: global citizenship, advocacy, capacity building and international volunteering.
As part of this, SPW provides a range of opportunities for young people to participate in international development through volunteering on SPW programmes overseas including: technical assistance roles, private sector employee sabbaticals, internships and as volunteer peer educators.
dance4life( is managed in the UK by SPW( is.an exciting international initiative that utilises a range of multimedia tools to actively inspire young people to get involved in the global response to HIV and AIDS.
dance4lifeis an exciting international initiative that utilises a range of multimedia tools to actively inspire young people to get involved in the global response to HIV and AIDS. It offersan innovative approach to a global problem - engaging young people in the UK to act as campaigners and peer educators through all aspects of youth culture, media, music and dance. dance4life is expanding both within the UK and Internationally, and thanks to a three year grant from the EC, and match funds from V, there are ambitious plans for the scope and impact of the programme.
Globally danc4life has reached 173,000 young people since 2003. By 2014, the programme hopes to reach 1 million young people as agents of change. The UK will be responsible for linking up with 30 other countries worldwide to reach these exciting targets over the next 4 years..
dance4life is managed in the UK by Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW) ( SPW, a youth-led international development agency, is in the process of dramatically increasing its operations and impact. Currently SPW has offices in Australia, India, Nepal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, UK, USA, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Essential Skills and Qualifications /
  • A University Degree or relevant work/voluntary experience
  • Understanding of the global HIV and AIDS pandemic and its impact on development
  • Experience of delivering projects or programmes
  • Experience of line managing staff or volunteers
  • Experience of volunteering, campaigning or fundraising for development issues
  • Good IT, written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of media and publicity as a means to deliver an effective project involving young people.
Desired:
  • Experience of budget management
  • Experience of delivering training or facilitating groups
  • Strong track record in developing and maintaining a variety of key partnerships.
  • Experience of working with young people using non-formal education

Main Duties / The main duties will be to coordinate the dance4life programme:
  • Programme coordination – coordinate all areas of the programme and provide direct support to the Programme officers, interns and tour team in delivery of the core programme activities
  • Operational planning and Monitoring and Evaluation– In conjunction with theInternational Programmes Manager, develop annual objectives and operational plans for the dance4life programme, ensuring all outputs and outcomes are met and monitored.
  • Human Resource Management - Direct line management of the Programme Officers, Office Interns and programme volunteers to ensure the successful delivery of the Dance4life school workshop tour and other programme activities.
  • Delivery of the Workshop Tour- Work with the Advocacy and Campaigns Coordinator, and the Dance4life team to plan and deliver SPW’s Workshops Tour as per our EC contract deliverables
  • Partnerships–Support the International Programmes Managerand other SPW International staff in developing partnerships and networks with relevant individuals and organisations to enable SPW to resource and deliver the dance4life programme.
  • Donor Management and Finance and Fundraising – To support the Programme Manager in ensuring accurate and timely reports are submitted to donors in line with requirements to secure future funding and ensure that expenditure is spent within the approved budget for the programme.

Time 50% / Programme coordination – coordinate all areas of the programme and provide direct support to the Programme Officers, interns and Tour Team in delivery of the core programme activities
Co-ordinate all areas of the Dance4life programme, and support the Programme Officers in the implementation of the programme areas including:
  • Dance4life Schools Tour: Nationwide Tour involving 7,000 Young people
  • Taking Action Groups and Development Training (training of trainers)
  • Creating Agents of Change (supporting young people taking action)
dance4life biannual Event for 2,000 Young people in London in November 2010
  • Campaign4Life- Running the Multimedia campaign for the project

Time 15% / Human Resource Management - Direct line management of the dance4lifeSchools Officer, Agents of Change Officer/s Multi-Media and Big Event Officer, Office Intern and the short-term volunteer Tour Team to ensure the successful delivery of the Dance4life School Workshop Tour and other programme activities.
  • Line management of Schools and Agents of Change Officers including regular line management meetings, setting personal objectives and regular reviews.
  • Alongside the Programmes Manager, building the capacity of the dance4life team to effectively deliver the programme deliverables
  • Implementing and adhering to all relevant SPW HR policies and procedures e.g. Induction, Sickness Absence etc
  • Induct and support office interns and develop short term objectives with them

Operational Planning - In conjunction with the Programmes Manager, develop annual objectives and operational plans for the dance4life programme, ensuring all outputs and outcomes are met and monitored.

  • Develop with the Programmes Manager annual detailed work plans for the programme, and formally review plans each quarter with the Programme Officer
  • Work with Programmes Manager to create ambitious, workable and realistic objectives for the programme
  • Design a detailed project plan to enable effective delivery of activities
  • To successfully monitor and evaluate the programme through assistance from the Programmes Manager.

Implement effective evaluation tools to measure the impact and success of the programme alongside the UK Programmes Manager.

Partnerships - To develop partnerships and networks with relevant individuals and local organisations to enable SPW to resource and deliver the dance4life programme

  • Sharing best practice with the IFPA (the Irish partner delivering the EC Grant), facilitating conference calls and support sessions and visits where appropriate.
  • Alongside the Senior Manager for International Programmes, SPW International Fundraising Team and Programmes Manager, develop external partnerships (e.g. media, communications and event management) to assist the programme in its outreach to young people in the UK.
  • Build relationships with networks and key organisations to secure school and college involvement
  • Publicise dance4life Events and news to all relevant partners

Donor Management and Finance and Fundraising– To support the Programmes Manager in ensuring accurate and timely reports are submitted to donors in line with requirements and oversee the budgets associated with delivering the programme.

  • Collate relevant data on programme activities in alignment with donor requirements
  • Support the writing of reports for funding and other stakeholders
  • Ensure expenditure is within budget, develop annual budgets and budgets for programme proposals as needed
  • Attend meetings with corporate donors with the Programmes Manager and/or colleagues from SPW International where appropriate.
