Job Summary/Purpose:

The lead preceptor is a professional nurse who assumes the responsibility of assuring that the Nursing Preceptor Program is geared toward supporting competency development of new staff in an environment that is conducive to learning. Additionally, the lead preceptor assists the preceptors in applying strategies to enhance communications, critical thinking, and conflict management.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current State Illinois Registered Nurse License

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

CPR certified

Essential Physical Requirements:

·  Ability to perform light to heavy work, which includes frequent lifting and positioning of patients.

·  For greater than 50 pounds it may be expected that the nurse will request assistance from a co-worker for lifting and transferring.

·  Ability to stand/walk 6 to 8 hours per shift.

·  Ability to frequently bend, twist, reach, stoop and occasionally kneel and squat.

·  Ability to perform various repetitive tasks i.e., simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation (keyboard).

·  Good visual acuity is required for patient assessment, medication administration and documentation of care.

·  Good hearing is essential for accurate patient assessment.

·  All employees within this job classification may have high-risk exposure to blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.

Position Specific Responsibilities and Competencies / Reviews/organizes the general hospital and specific nursing units orientation process that reflects the mission, vision, values of the organization, and the unit’s scope of care.
Facilitates the orientation of new nursing stakeholders by maintaining an environment conducive to teaching and learning.
Collaborates with the new hires in the selection of an appropriate clinical preceptor.
Monitors the progress of the orientees’ learning experience and completion of orientation objectives through regular conferences with the preceptors and orientees.
Initiates feedback from the preceptor regarding the orientees’ performance.
Readily available to the preceptors and orientees’ for consultation.
Conducts an interview with orientees’ after the orientation period is completed to identify factors that support/impede retention.
Orients new preceptors to the Nursing Preceptor Program.
Coordinates preceptor training and workshops to advance preceptors’ knowledge/skill.
Collaborates with nursing education department in providing nursing (RN’s and PCT’s) continuing education.
Facilitates nursing staff’s education, training and evaluation of new products/equipment.
Coordinates nursing grand rounds.
Acts as a COMPASS resource to the nursing staff.
Monitors nursing documentation for accuracy and compliance.
Assures patient confidentiality/privacy by:
·  Proper disposal of patient sensitive information.
·  Follow release of information policies.
·  Assure any discussions related to patient care are conducted in private.
