Job Advert for Lead Chaplain (part time)
Taunton Team Chaplaincy Trust is looking for a Christian leader of faith and energy to fill a key post which has just become vacant. The Trust is entering its fourth year of training volunteer lay chaplains and putting them to work in the retail, business, leisure and civic sectors of Taunton. This is a great opportunity for the right person to take this well established work onward.
The Trust is a non-denominational charity representing and financed by a broad group of local churches. You will be working mainly from home. You will be responsible to the Trustees for fulfilling the chaplaincy’s mission and to a line manager for day-to-day operations. You will be asked to nominate a Spiritual Director and to be accountable to him or her.
You will liaise with management and employers in Taunton to explain the benefits of workplace chaplaincy and to negotiate for chaplains to visit their premises to offer free confidential pastoral care. You will be encouraged to develop your own workplace ministry if other duties permit.
You will be responsible for maintaining the comprehensive training programme for lay chaplains, whom you will interview, select and train. As their supervisor, you will personally ensure that they maintain the highest ministry standards.
You must be a good self-starter and time manager as well as a team leader and team builder. Your skills of communication and presentation are vital because you will represent the Trust to the world of business and commerce, to local authorities and to the churches. You will be encouraged to participate in the B1 church leaders group.
You will not necessarily be ordained, but the post requires you to show evidence of spiritual maturity, to embrace the doctrinal beliefs of the Trust and to uphold its Christian ethical basis. Further details can be found in the Job Description. You will have been a member in good standing of a Trinitarian church.
Your past experience of Christian ministry (either voluntary or salaried) will not necessarily include chaplaincy work. If it does not, you will be prepared to undergo a process of familiarization proposed by the Trustees. Your experience will include most or all of the following: pastoral care; relational evangelism; one-to-one witnessing; team building; team leadership and accountability to spiritual leaders. You will also have experience of secular employment, preferably in a role that has interfaced with the public.
Salary will be £15,750 p.a. for 24 hours per week or a proportion thereof if a lower numberhours are agreed by the Trust. This salary includes a 5% pension contribution for the postholder to invest in a scheme of their choice.
