Long day: 08:00-21:30. Handover with general paediatrics followed by the neonatal ward round. Carry the labour ward bleep from 14:00. Spend afternoon covering labour ward and finishing off jobs from the ward round.
Labour ward/post natal ward 08:00-17:00. Attend morning handover. Hold bleep until 14:00 covering labour ward. If you admit a baby to the unit it is good if you can do the admission SEND, initial bloods and growth/drug charts. You also do the reviews of babies on the postnatal ward who are on antibiotics or have medical problems. There is a list on the bottom of the handover and one in the baby check book for the extra ones the midwives are worried about. When booking scans, e.g. hip scans, staple the USS request to the front of brown notes for the baby (not just the yellow post natal ones) and tell Lynn the ward clerk on Alexandra ward and she will arrange them for you. If you need to put in cannulas it is easier to take the baby to the neonatal unit and use the resuscitaire in the cold room.
Wendy Ward 08:00-17:00 Morning handover with general paediatrics in the seminar room above Peter Pan. Then go to Wendy Ward and look at the admissions/day attender’s book. There are things like reviews of children who have been on the ward and need a one off follow up, jaundice clinic, cannulas for scans, allergy patients having food challenges etc. The nurses are amazing and will tell you what to do! Check the results book. There will be an SpR covering Wendy for advice as well.
Nights: 20:30-09:30. One SHO covers neonates at night with registrar support. You carry the labour ward bleep, are responsible for new admissions and do the night summaries of all the babies on the unit. Routine weekly bloods are done on a Sunday night in the hot room. You print out the blood forms for the cold room babies on Wednesday night (Jan the phlebotomist collects the bloods on Thursday morning). Plot the weight and head circumference of all the babies in the cold room on Wednesday night, and the hot room on Sunday night. One registrar cross covers neonates and paediatrics and you may not see a lot of them on neonates unless you have an unwell baby – use the nurses if you are unsure – they are very good! They will know if you need to call the SpR and have often done it before calling you!

· Informal bedside teaching. The Consultants and Registrars are very motivated and willing to teach

Top tips / · Get a copy of clinic schedule early on so that you can mark out particular clinics you would like to attend- there are lots of different specialist clinics
· Spend an afternoon with Jan (phlebotomist) on the Wendy Ward day unit to sharpen your venepuncture skills
· Ensure you apply for study leave early - trust requires 6 weeks notice if claiming from study leave budget
· Get on well with the nurses and your life will be made very easy!
· Attend an NLS course before starting the post if possible
· Bring lunch!
