“Jesus, Our Example in Soul-winning”

John 4:1-30, 39-42

INTRO. Jesus, our Savior, should be to every Christian the prime example of

how to live the Christian life. He was motivated in His mission by

love, as we should be. He had compassion on everyone He

encountered.

In Luke 19:10, Jesus said, “For the Son of man is come to seek and

save that which was Lost.” Jesus was motivated by love to see all

men come to Him. We, as Christians, which means Christ-like,

should have an intense desire to see all men saved!

In our text, we read an account of Jesus and the woman at the well.

Jesus had a desire to go to Galilee, but according to v.4, “He must

needs go through Samaria.” Jesus knew there was someone in need

in Samaria. So wherever the need was, that is where Jesus was! The

Samaritans and the Jews had very little dealings. In fact, Peter says

in Acts 10:28, that according to Jewish law, it was unlawful for a Jew

to keep company or come unto one of another nation.

Even the Samaritan woman in v9, asked Jesus, “How is it that thou,

being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria?”

Because she realized the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans.

But that didn't stop Jesus from witnessing to her. It shouldn't stop

us from going to the black man, or the yellow man, or the red man.

God's Love has no ethnic barriers! All men need the Savior. We

should try to win them as Christ did!

Soul-Winning As Christ Did It:

(1) He Made A Tactful Approach

Text: John 4:6-9

A.  He Dealt with Her Implicitly—“Give me to drink…” (v7b).

B.  He Dealt with Her Individually—“For his disciples were gone away..” (v8a).

(2) He Aroused Interest

Text: John 4:10-14

A. He Told Her The Potential of This Water—“Whosoever drinketh of the

water that I shall give him shall never thirst…” (v14a).

B. He Told Her The Power of This Water—“…the water that I shall give

him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

(v14b).

C. He Told Her The Price of This Water—“If thou knewest the gift of God,

and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have

asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” (v10).

(3) He Produced An Intense Desire

Text: John 4:15-28

A. She Was Convinced—“…Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not,

neither come hither to draw.” (v15b).

B. She Was Convicted (vv. 15-26).

C. She Was Converted—“The woman then left her waterpot, and went her

way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me

all things that I ever did: is not this the Christ?” (vv. 28-29).

(4) He Secured A Public Confession

Text: John 4:28-30, 39

A. Her Confession Was Persuasive—“Come, see a man, which told me all

things that I ever did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the

city, and came unto him.” (vv. 29-30).

B. Her Confession Was Powerful—“And many of the Samaritans of that

city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told

me all that ever I did.” (v39).

Closing: Jesus just before he left this earth He gave the Church a Commission

to win this world for Him. My question is: Are we doing all we can for

Him? Are we seeking to win the lost to Christ? Psalms 107:2 says,

“Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from

the hand of the enemy.” Are we telling others what Jesus did for us?
