John 17

October 4, 2015

“Some brethren pray by the yard; but true prayer is measured by weight, and not by length.” Charles Haddon Spurgeon

If we become to Jesus what He was to the Father, then Jesus will become to us what the Father was to Jesus.

Three Principles of Living aGod-Honoring Life as a Disciple:

  1. Jesus Lived His Life With Intentional Purpose.

John 17:2 (NKJV)
As You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as you have given Him.

  1. Jesus Lived His Life Under Divine Authority.

John 17:2 (NKJV)
As You have given Him authority/power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as you have given Him.

“Do not pray for an easy life, pray to be a stronger disciple. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for power equal to your tasks.” Phillip Brooks

“Thou art coming to a King, large petitions with thee bring. For His grace and power are such, none can ever ask too much.” John Newton

  1. Jesus Lived His Life Under a Divine Plan.

John 17:1 (NKJV)
Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: "Father, the hour has come…

Five Reasons Why You Need a Plan:

  1. When we live by God’s divine plan, nothing can divert you.

John 2:1-4 (NASB)
1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine."

  1. When we live by God’s divine plan, nothing can demolish you.

John 7:30 (NASB)
So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

John 8:20 (NASB)

These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.

God’s man living in the center of God’s will is immortal until God is through with him.

  1. When we live by God’s divine plan, nothing can dishearten you.

John 12:27 (NASB)

Now my soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour.

D.When we live by God’s divine plan, nothing can disappoint you.

John 16:32 (NASB)
Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.

  1. When we live by God’s plan, nothing can defeat you.

John 17:1 (NASB)
Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify you.

Closing Verse:

John 17:4 (NASB)
I glorified you on the earth, having accomplished the work, which you have given me to do.

My goal is not to find out how much work there is to do, but to find out how much work Jesus has assigned me to do and then to do it.
