Second Sunday of Easter or

(sunday of diving mercy)

Act 5:12-16, Rv 1:9-11a, 12-13m 17-19m Jn 20:19-31 (45)

“…Jesus came and stood before them. ‘Peace be with you,’ he said. When he had said this he showed them his hands and his side. At the sight of the Lord the disciples rejoiced. ‘Peace be with you’ he said again. ‘As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ Then he breathed on them and said ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive men’s sins they are forgiven them; if you hold them bound, they are held bound.’”

We are so familiar with the visit of Jesus to the upper room, the hesitation of our friend Thomas to believe and our joint statement of faith ‘My Lord and my God.’ The room must have been bursting with joy beyond limits, as the disciples were changed from fear, because they had seemingly abandoned Him, and now He searches them out to reassure them of His love.

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. Surely the gospel passage reassures us that the presence of the Risen Christ is to allow His mercy to touch our lives. As He says ‘Peace be with you’ consider that He is asking you if you want to know His mercy and forgiveness. Because His mercy is without limit, what things or what one thing, do I feel I need to ask for forgiveness? Unfortunately, because we have lost a sense of sin, we have also presumed the gift of mercy which Jesus offers us, but wishes us to seek.

May I use the Divine Mercy Sunday to do three things:

1. Know the Lord wishes to forgive me.

2. Know that I am in need of forgiveness for something.

3. Ask for forgiveness of others and celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation. Don’t let God’s mercy go to waste! ‘Through the ministry of the church may He give you pardon and peace.’

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” Of course, we know Jesus was talking to Thomas who needed to see Jesus to believe He had been raised from the dead, but what are the things we fail to believe because we have not seen them? In the peace movement that is Pax Christi, we often hear people say, “There will never be peace.” Educators and those working in Corrections meet young people who seem incorrigible. Some will say they’ll never be rehabilitated. Jesus, Himself, said, “The poor will always be with you.” In such a world where violence is pervasive, delinquent youth resist transformation, and poverty is systemic, how can we believe that they can be overcome? Can we be blessed enough to believe without seeing? Can the Resurrection convince us that miracles are possible, even today? Can we commit to helping to make them happen? If enough of us do, we could be very happily surprised.

In an afternoon of teaching, dialog and meditation, Fr. Laurence will lead us to a deeper understanding of meditation as the path to living a contemplative life in the midst of an overbooked, hectic, urban environment. He will show how the practice of daily meditation fills us with hope and transforms us so that our personal experience of inner peace gradually raises the level of peace in our troubled world. He will explore the benefits and spiritual fruits of meditation—as a way of prayer rooted in the gospel teaching and yet of universal value.

Presenter: Laurence Freeman OSB

Fr. Laurence Freeman, a Benedictine monk, is the spiritual guide and director of The World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM). A “monastery without walls,” WCCM is an international and ecumenical network of meditators, groups and centers now spanning more than 100 countries. Inspired by his mentor, Fr. John Main OSB, Fr. Laurence works to recover Christianity’s own contemplative wisdom tradition and promotes it in the Church and society at large. He travels around the world teaching the unique role of meditation as a spiritual discipline, and encourages the teaching of Christian meditation to children and students. He is active in interfaith dialogue including the Way of Peace with the Dali Lama, which contributed to the settlement in Northern Ireland. He is the author of many books including: Jesus: The Teacher Within; First Sight: The Experience of Faith; Christian Meditation:Your Daily Practice; Web of Silence; and Light Within.
