Course DescriptionandLearningObjectives

Organizationscomeinmanyvarieties,andinmanyshapesandsizes.Whydoesan organizationlookthewayitlooks?Whatarethefactorsthatshouldbeconsideredwhenputtingittogether?Andwhenfacedwithdynamicenvironments,increasinglyintensecompetition,andotherconditionscallingforchangingtheorganizationaldesign,whatshouldaskillfulmanagerdo? Wewillseeinthiscoursethattherearemanyelements,orbuildingblocks,thatgointothemakeupofallorganizations.Thedesignofanorganization­howthosebuildingblocksareputtogether-canhelpdeterminethedegreetowhichitissuccessfulinfulfillingitsmission.Additionally,wewillexplorehoworganizationsevolved,andthemanagementpractices thatcontributetoourunderstandingoforganizationstoday. Finally, sincemanagingorganizationsdoesnothappenin avacuum,butratherincollaborationwithnumerousstakeholders,wewillalsodelveintosomeoftheessentialskillsthatsuccessful managersshouldpossess.

CourseFormat,LearningAssessment,andGrading

Thecourseiscomprisedofacombinationoflectures,in-classteamworkandexercises, andcases.Itisexpectedthatallreadingbedonepriortoclass ontheassigned day.Assessmentoflearningwillbeaccomplishedbymeansofexamsandquizzes,writeupsofin-classexercises,andteamcasepapers.Finalcoursegradeswillbedeterminedbyaweightedaverageofallcoursecomponents,asfollows:

IwilldoeverythingIcantohelpyousucceedinthisclass.Ifyouhavequestionsaboutanyofyourgrades,Iwillbegladtomeetwithyouinpersoninmyofficetodiscuss.PleasenotethatIwillnotdiscussindividualgradesviaemail;norwillIgive"extrawork"attheendofthesemesterforyoutopullupyourgradeifyoudon'tlikeyourcoursegrade.Ihaveonoccasiongradedonacurve,andgivenextracreditduringasemester,butitwouldbewisenottoexpectthat.

Exams

Thereare2mid-semester examsandafinalexam.Examswillcoverallmaterialassigned inthetextbookandreadings,aswellasmaterialpresented inclass(lectures,videos,discussion,etc.).Examsareclosed-bookandwillconsistofmultiplechoiceandtrue/falsequestions.Note:Allexamsarerequired.ThereareNOoptionalexams.Nocellphonesorotherelectronicdevicesmaybeusedduringexams.Itisessentialtoarriveontimeforexams;oncestudentsfinishtheexamandleave,noonearrivingafterthatwillbeallowedtotaketheexam. Refertothescheduleforexam dates.Make-upexamswillbegivenonlyintheeventofanexcusedabsence(death inthefamily,severeillness,

Universitybusiness,orotherunavoidableoccurrencesofaseriousnature).Legitimatedocumentation(letter,doctor'snote,memofromacademicadvisor, etc.)mustbeprovidedtotheinstructor.Unlesstheabsenceisduetoan emergency,youmustnotifytheinstructorbeforethescheduledexam.Make-upswillbegivenonthelastdayofclass May 10)oratanother timetobearranged;undernocircumstanceswillamake-upexambegivenpriortotheregular scheduledexam.

In-classTeamActivities

Akeyelementofthiscourseistheapplicationofconceptsandtheories,whichwillbeachieved throughcaseanalysis,andin-classexercisesanddiscussion.Team-basedactivecooperativelearningisanessentialcomponentofthisclassforseveralreasons:

•Managingpeopleandorganizationsrequiresawidearrayofknowledgeandskill;

•employersconsistentlylookforemployeeswhocandemonstratetheabilitytoworkwithothers;

•cooperative(i.e.,team-based)learninghasbeenshowntoleadtogreaterretentionofknowledge,deeperunderstanding,andincreasedmotivationtolearn.

Youwillbeassignedtoateamoffourorfivestudents.Itisexpectedthatallteammembersparticipateequallyintheteamactivitiesandprojects;itisuptotheteam,nottheprofessor,tomakesure thatallmembersdotheirpart.Allstudentswillevaluateteammemberstwiceduringthesemester,andpoorevaluationswillbetakenintoaccountwhengradesaredetermined!Therefore,itisinyourbestinteresttotaketeamworkseriouslyandmakeameaningfulcontributiontotheteameffort.

Teammembersformulateacodeofcooperation(the"contract")andareexpectedtoadheretoit.Ifamemberisnotlivinguptothecode,pleasediscussitwiththeprofessor.Ifalleffortsatcorrectingateammember'sbehaviorfail,theteammayfirethatpersonafteraconsultationwiththeprofessor;inthatcasethe"fired"memberwillhavetocompleteallteamassignmentsasateamofone.

Mygoalistomakeyourteamexperienceinthisclassapositiveandsuccessfulone.Allteamactivitieswillbedoneduringclass,i.e.,thereisnoexpectationofoutsidegroupwork.Tomakethebestuseofyourclasstime,itiscriticalthateachteammember readthechapterandcasebeforeclassontheassignedday.Teamactivitiesfallintotwocategories:

•CaseforAnalysis("CFA").AnumberofclassdayswillbedevotedtoworkinginteamsonaCaseforAnalysiswhichwillbefoundattheendoftheassignedchapter.Yourteamwillberequiredtoanswerspecificquestionsabouteachcase(providedinclass)andsubmita1-pagereportwithyouranswers.Thiswillbeduebytheendofclassontheappropriateday.Thecasescountfor20%ofyourgrade.

•PracticingOrganizationalTheory("POT")andOtherExercises.Therewillbeavarietyofin-classexercisesthatprovidehands-onexperienceinapplyingorganizationaltheory.Eachexercisewillrequireateamresponsetobesubmittedduringclass.Exercisescountfor10%ofyourgrade.

Grading:Allteamassignmentswillbegradedforbothcontentandquality.Thatis, grammar,punctuation,spelling,coherence,andclaritywillbefactoredintothegrade.Teamassignmentswillbegradedona10-pointscale(10points=excellent;8points=satisfactory;5points=minimallyacceptable;0points=unsatisfactory).Allteammemberswhoarepresentwillreceivethesamegradeforeachactivity.Inmost circumstances,amemberwhoisabsentwillreceivenocreditforthatactivity.However,studentswhomissateamactivityforalegitimate,documentablereasonshouldspeakwithmeregardingthepossibilityofmakingup thatgrade.

ClassroomCitizenship

Mygoalistomakethisclassasenjoyable,interestingandrewardingaspossible.Disruptionsanddistractionscanruintheexperienceforallofus.Withthatinmind,pleaseobservethefollowingguidelines:

•Showupontime.Latecomersdisrupttheclass.

•Oncetheclassbegins,don'tengagein anyactivitiesthataren'trelatedtotheclass.Theseinclude(butarenotlimitedto)sleeping;readingnewspapers;doingcrosswords,sudoku,etc.;usingcellphonesorotherelectronicdevices;usingalaptoptoemail,IM,orsurfthe.net;studyingforotherexams;eating;andhavingsideconversations. Ireservetheright torequirethatelectronicdevicesbeputawayiftheybecomeadistraction.

•Pleasedon'tpackupyourbooksbeforetheclassisover,anddon'tleaveearly,unlessit'sforacompellingreason.Iwatchthetimecarefully,andwillalwaysdismisstheclassontime,ifnotearly.

•Comepreparedandreadytoparticipate.

Academic Integrity

Itisexpectedthatstudentswillneitherparticipateinnorencourageunethicalactivitiessuchascheating onexams.Byplacingyournameonexams,homework,orotherwrittensubmission,youareaffirming thatthecontentsareyourworkonly(exceptwherecollaborationwithotherstudentsisauthorizedbytheinstructor).Studentsare expectedtobefamiliarwiththeUniversity'sguidelinesonacademicintegritywhichcanbefoundinthe2013-2014StudentHandbook,SectionB3("AcademicDishonesty")oftheCodeofStudentConduct(p.32-33Landwhichareincludedinthissyllabusbyreference.
