Theresultsbelowreflecttheyieldpotentialof

theRussianwheataphidresistantvarietieswithoutanyaphidpressure. Notethatnotallvarietieswereplantedinalllocations(seeTable1). Table2summarizesaverageyieldperformanceoverthemaximumnumberoftestresultswithcommonvarieties,e.g.,19testswithHalt,TAM107,andProwers. AsinpreviousyearswithoutRussianwheataphid,HaltandTAM107yieldswereverysimilar. TheaverageProwersyieldwas5bu/aclowerthanTAM107butmanyofthetestswereconductedinlocationswhereProwers(andparent

Lamar)wouldnotberecommendedforuse. TheaverageperformanceofYumarwassimilartoHaltandTAM107withoutanyRWApressureandisexpectedtobesignificantlybetterthanTAM107ifRWAwerepresent.

Newin1997/98werefourlocationswhereeach

varietywasplantedtwice,oncewithphosphatefertilizer,andoncewithout. SeeTables3-5forresults.

PhosphorusOn-FarmTests

Onfourofthecollaborativeon-farmtestsites(COFT),wecomparedphosphorusfertilizerapplication(basedonCSUsoiltestrecommendations)withnophosphorusfertilizerforeachofthefourtestvarieties.ThreeofthesitestestedLowinphosphorus,andonetestedMedium(Table3). TheLowtestingsiteshaveahighprobabilityofgettingayieldresponsetoPfertilizer,andtheMediumsitehasamoderateprobabilityofyieldincrease.

Weused18-46-0(DAP)tosupplyPexceptattheBacaCountysitewhere10-34-0wasused. Inallcases,asmallamountofNwasappliedwiththePfertilizer,inadditiontoanyfarmerappliedN. Yieldsweresignificantlyincreasedforallfourvarietieswithan

fertilizercostsandtheimprovedweedcompetitionand

subsequentreductioninherbicidecosts. These

benefitswerenotfactoredintothesecalculations.EachfarmershouldweighthecostsandbenefitsofPfertilizerfortheirownconditions(soilfertility,weedpopulation,andprice).
