Jen Shonk – Lesson 4 – Math with Ten Tiles on Smart board

Credit – Using Harvey Almarode’s Ten Tiles Frame, my students will fill in answers on the smart board for a small group math lesson.

Topic – Math review and logic.

Grade Level - Kindergarten

Standards Met - Kindergarten Math SOLs K.4(b), K.6, K.7,K.11(a).

Lesson Time Frame – Approximately 10-15 minutes.

Class Starter – We will answer a “problem of the day” to get our math brains started before the lesson starts.

Statement of Objectives – Students will review Kindergarten math skills learned throughout the year. In the course of the review, they will cover Math SOLs K.4(b), K.6, K.7,K.11(a).

Guided Practice – With the help of a teacher’s assistant or myself, a small group of students will work out the answers to the “10 tiles” questions. Each number will only be used once.

Independent Practice – The independent part of this activity will be for the children in the small group to solve the problems on a printable copy (in a plastic sleeve and Expo marker) before the answer is put on the smart board.

Reteaching – The students will reteach each other as they fill in the numbers, explaining “why” they chose that number for their answers, whether right or wrong.

Assessment – Assessment will take place as the questions are completed, on whether they can complete the skills as well as use logic to fill in the blanks with each number only used once. I purposely put one with no numbers filled in so they would be forced to figure it out the “long” way (by answering all other questions first), rather than just guessing.

I do not have Notebook on my home computer, but here are the questions that I will rework using Harvey’s outline on his website.

1. Sum of 6 and 1 = ______(7)

2. Number of sides on a . ______(4)

3. Value of five pennies. ______(5)

4. Number that is one more than 9. ______(10)

5. ______+ ______= ______(6, 2, 8)

6. Number of sides on a . (3)

7. Sum of 8 + 1= ______(9)
