BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

NAVY JUNIOR RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS

119 E. 39TH STREET

HOUSTON, TEXAS 77018

26 August 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians

Welcome to the Booker T. Washington High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Program. The mission of the NJROTC program is “to instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.” The program is devoted to your child’s growth, both as a student and as a person. NJROTC is a cooperative effort on the part of the U.S. Navy and Booker T. Washington High School. The goal of the program is to give each student the opportunity for total development and self improvement. NJROTC teaches self discipline, confidence, leadership and pride in a job well done.

Additionally, the NJROTC program offers each student challenges and the opportunity to:

·  Sharpen communication skills

·  Promote and encourage citizenship through participation in community service projects

·  Develop leadership potential

·  Strengthen self-esteem

·  Improve physical fitness

·  Provide incentives to live drug free

·  Promote graduation from high school and develop a solid foundation for career development

NJROTC offers many opportunities for teamwork, advancement, and self enrichment that are not available in other high school courses. Student (cadet) success is the main goal of all Navy JROTC learning experiences. Our course description includes:

·  Unit 1: Career Planning

·  Unit 2: Leadership, Motivation, Relationships, Attitudes and Emotions

·  Unit 3: Citizenship and American Government

·  Unit 4: U.S. Navy

·  Unit 5: Wellness, Fitness, and First Aid

·  Unit 6: Geography and Survival Skills

During this school year, your child will be required to participate in three major events. Failure to participate in either event listed below, could adversely affect your child’s grade:

a.  Mini Boot Camp which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2015 at Booker T. Washington High School.

b.  Navy Annual Military Inspection which is scheduled for Jan. 28, 2015 at Booker T. Washington High School.

c.  Annual HISD Final Review is tentatively on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Delmar Stadium.

In addition to the events mentioned above, the company will be participating in several parades and will be traveling to Galveston, Austin, College Station and San Antonio, TX this school year. A schedule of events for the upcoming school year (subject to change) is attached for your review. We encourage you to allow your child to participate. The more exposure they get to new things, the better citizen they will become.

Additionally, we don’t charge you or your child for the uniforms, sweats, athletic gear, name tags or anything related to the NJROTC program. Some schools do, but we choose not to. We rely on fundraising to help offset the cost of the things that we do. To that end, we are going to sell discount cards as a fundraiser this year. We have done this the past three years and seemingly do better every year. The success of the fundraiser is totally up to the cadets and we need your help. Your child will receive three discount cards. They are $20/card. We are asking that we receive $60 back from your child. All proceeds go toward the Annual Military Ball, which will be held on Mar 13, 2015. This year, we want to make sure we have a sit down meal for the cadets at the ball, and that comes at a little higher cost. I think they are worth it, so please support us in this. If you are able to sell more than three cards, we can give you as many as you can sell. There will be a raffle for an XBOX One for the top 10 sellers.

Instructor staff follows:

a.  Lamar Johnson, CDR, Retired, NS2, 3 and 4 (second, third and fourth year cadets), Senior Naval Science Instructor

b. Stacey Freeman, Master Chief, USN, Retired, NS1 (first year cadets)

Your child should have brought home several forms which are required to be on file for all cadets. These forms remain here at the school and are used for school purposes only. Your cooperation in returning these forms as soon as possible will be greatly appreciated.

Because we often hear from parents that they don’t know what is required or is going on, I ask that you email me or call me.

We look forward to having a very successful year. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (713) 696-6634 or you may email me at .

Sincerely,

Lamar Johnson
