Jason Sinquefield EDUC 830 Interview 3/25/14

Question 1: What makes a coffee shop visit ideal?

Respondent: Um. No screaming babies. And, um. The barista getting my drink order correct, and um, everyone around me respecting…the…needs of others around them.

Question 2: What makes you decide to frequent a bookstore café?

Respondent: I don’t. I don’t have the need to visit them. I don’t spend money at coffee shops regularly and I have a Nook so I don’t really need to go to bookstores either. (Me: why would other people go?). My guess is to meet other people, interviews, or gosh I don’t know meetings study groups, things like that. (Is that why you would’nt go? Because your space could potentially be interrupted? No, not necessarily, but I would hope that they’d be respectful of others if that’s what they’re going for.

Question 3: How do people determine where to sit in a café?

Respondent: I always like to sit by the window!

Question 4: How does the surrounding bookstore influence people in the café?

Respondent: Um, I don’t know that it would influence them or not influence them.

Question 5: Describe the types of things that almost all patrons do.

Respondent: I think that you might be less likely to order something at a bookstore café. I don’t know there’s not as much pressure because there’s more to do in that much larger area than coffee and muffin ordering. There’s less pressure to purchase something.

Question 6: Are bookstore cafés a destination, or usually a detour prior to or after another destination?

Respondent: I think they’re a destination because the quick in and outs would probably be reserved for a place that doesn’t have quite as large of a presence or you have to work as hard to get to. In and outs are like drive thrus or regular coffee shops. It’s kind of a pain to go into a Barnes & Noble just to get coffee unless you’re like walking right by it at the mall already. I wouldn’t drive to a Barnes & Noble just to get a coffee when I could go to a quick service Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts or whatever. I think that you’re probably going in there to get a book, and then decide to get a coffee.

Question 7: What behaviors of others in the café impact you?

Respondent: Um, if they’re loud and rowdy I’m more likely to leave…or be ugly.

Question 8: A bookstore café is a good place to…

Respondent: Have a study group. (Me: so a good place for social interactions in general?) Not necessarily, unless it has a purpose. Like, you know, a study group..not like “let’s everybody grab a coffee at Barnes & Noble”, unless it’s your book club. That could be fun.

Question 9: What is the most important thing I should know about people frequenting bookstore cafés?

Respondent: That they don’t mind a lot of noise while they work?
