Our 2017 season will begin with the February trackdays and school and then our next event will be our season opener. There will not be a trackday on the first weekend of March.

Jason Brown will continue to be the New Riders Clinic instructor this season. On a sad note, Peter Bonner, ASMA’s first NRC instructor passed away this winter. Peter was a nice man, good father, and could baffle you with numbers! Ride in Peace Peter.

Evan Steel Performance will once again return as the sponsor of our premier race, the ESP Formula Arroyo Race. Speedcell will continue with Formula Amateur, Twigs Jewels will continue to sponsor the Unlimited Superbike class.

Once again ASMA Racing will be trackside for sales and service of Pirelli and Dunlop tires, Chickenhawk tire warmers,Ferodo Brake Pad’s and VP racing fuels. will continue to sponsor the Unlimited Superstock class and is a great place to visit during your offseason builds for your Vesrah brake pad’s, Deus fasteners and many other products.

One of the new things we’d like to do this year, that we planned on doing last year, and the year before, is to once again make our website more interesting. We used to have interviews and other interesting bits to keep the website fresh. So, we’ll once again be doing some interviews and profiles, both on riders and maybe even some of our sponsors. If you’ve got an idea please let us know, because it takes more than one or two people to come up with ideas to make this all work. This was planned for 2014 but it seems my injuries, hospital rooms, too much time spent recovering etc….. for some reason I got injured and didn’t get it done!

As always, we ask that you give us your ideas to help the series become better. We won’t always use your ideas, a lot of times we’ve already tried them or seen them done other places, but without new ideas things can get stagnant.

Get bumped up but not ready yet? Like most clubs, ASMA allows racers to petition to drop down a class if that racer is not fast enough or not experienced enough to race as an expert.

If you were bumped years ago and have not been competitive, or you just got bumped up and don’t feel you’re ready, you can contact us and we’ll look at your lap times, results and make a decision.

Unfortunately, during bad economic times that have less racers than normal, clubs may bump racers that normally wouldn’t have been forced to advance to help expert grids grow. We will do our best to make sure racers are in the classes they SHOULD be racing with. With that said, I’m totally against cherry picking, so if you apply to be held back you must be a worthy applicant.

License renewals must be received by March 1stto guarantee your current number and allow us time to make sure all paid for license’s will be ready to pick up at the 1st round.

Do not forget we have the first time trackday certificates and first time racer certificates available. If you write your name on those forms, when a new rider turns them in you get $25.00 credit towards your next entry. These were put in place years ago and have helped many riders, a few have even raced free for a few weekends by getting their friends to come try it out. :

1. Changes in 2017 rules

2. Unlimited Superbike will be moved to race #1, and Unlimited Superstock will be moved to the end of the day. This is being done because everyone wants to race in the first race, but too many bikes have illegal modifications.

4. Formula 500 replaces LW Superbike and will use the same motorcycle eligibility rules as UltraLightGrand Prix, with the exceptions of Honda CBR500 and KTM’s, but will allow unlimited modifications to the chassis, bodywork, and intake systems. Internal engine modifications must remain as described in ULWSB. 500 Cup replaces Ultra Light Cup and allows the same bikes.

Proposed 2017 ASMA Ultra Light Grand Prix, Formula 500, and 500 Cup

  1. Eligible Bikes.
  2. Kawasaki 250 and 300 Ninja (all Classes)
  3. Honda CBR250, CBR300 (all Classes) CBR500 for Formula 500 and 500 Cup
  4. Yamaha R3 All Classes
  5. KTM 390 and 390 Cup (Formula 500 and 500 Cup)
  6. Benelli, Hyosung and other models allowed provided they are produced as a street legal motorcycle that can be bought off the showroom floor and registered. Supermoto and dual sport bikes NOT ELIGIBLE for these classes.
  7. No other motorcycle allowed unless deemed legal by an ASMA Rule Committee
  8. Tires and Wheels
  9. Any bike that did not come with 17 inch wheels from the factory may use wheels, forks and triple clamps from any machine so long as they are 17 inch wheels as long as they were original on a mass produced motorcycle.
  10. Tires may be of slick or DOT nature.
  11. Horsepower limits
  12. To keep the class as inexpensive as possible, while allowing more motorcycles into the class we will include horsepower limits for 2017. The only way to enforce these limits is to use one dyno for all protests, if needed. Evan Steel Performance will handle all dyno work for protests. If there is a protest over horsepower, the protester will give ASMA $200, ASMA will seal the motor of the protested bike until the dyno run has been performed. If the protested bike is under the limit, the owner receives $200, and if it is over the limit the protester receives his money back minus the dyno fee.
  13. KTM 390, Yamaha R3, Honda CBR300, Kawasaki Ninja 300 all have a 38hp cap.
  14. Kawasaki Ninja 250 has a cap of 34hp
  15. Honda CBR and VTR 250’s have a cap of 32hp (if you’re a magician and could get that out of one…)
  16. Model Specific rules:
  17. KTM 390 Cup bike must remain as legal for MotoAmerica competition excluding tire choice.
  18. KTM 390 standard model must retain stock airbox with no modifications, stock air filter, stock exhaust and completely stock engine.
  19. Yamaha R3 must retain stock airbox with no modifications and stock air filter.
  20. Kawasaki Ninja 300 must retain stock airbox with no modifications and stock air filter.
  21. Kawasaki Ninja 250 may remove airbox and remove or replace air filter.
  22. Honda CBR250 and 300 may remove or modify stock airbox .
