8 JANUARY

(2) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

MARK 14:32-52

The agony and the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Did the cross have to happen? It seems odd that we’d be focusing on the cross right now, just after focusing on and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. But as I taught in December, the manger and the cross are intimately and intentionally intertwined. This is God’s plan and heart for us to understand.

15 JANUARY

ROBIN BAKER

2ND STREETER AND GFU PRESIDENT

“THY KINGDOM COME”

22 JANUARY

(3) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

MARK 14:53-72

Jesus is tried by the chief priests, elders and scribes … Peter’s three denials of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. How open are you with others about being a follower of Jesus Christ? There’s a price to pay spiritually for warming ourselves by the fires of secrecy. What price are you paying? Would are you willing to do get out of this bondage?

FEBRUARY 2012

5 FEBRUARY | 2ND STREET SHARES IN COMMUNION

(4) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

MARK 15:1-21

Jesus is tried before Pilate and the soldiers mock Jesus. If you were standing in front of Jesus, what would you ask Him? What do you know about Pilate … how he thought, what his job entailed, about his family? Being in relationship with people creates a place where we can talk with them about things that matter, things that last for eternity, the Gospel. Jesus continues to take steps toward the cross and the completion of His commitment to living out the plans of God the Father.

12 FEBRUARY

(5) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

MARK 15:22-39

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This morning we’ll look at the different characters who are part of the Crucifixion story, and ponder the real-life theological implications of relating to these characters by looking into the verses of Scripture and into the lyrics of the song “Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord?)”.

19 FEBRUARY

(6) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

MARK 15:40 – 16:8

Jesus Christ is resurrected from the dead. We’re either 10 months late, or 2 months early. But here we are at the resurrection, so it’s Easter in February. Jesus is alive and well, and God wants His death and resurrection to be at the very epicenter of all we are and all we do. How does the resurrection affect our “being” and our “doing”, our “attitudes” and our “actions”, and our “private” and “public” lives?

26 FEBRUARY

GFU UNIVERSITY PLAYERS

“And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them…” (MARK 10:32) Perhaps doing traveling drama ministry makes us notice how many Biblical stories are stories from the road: of refugees seeking asylum, of soldiers chasing (or being chased by) their enemies, of merchants seeking a profit, of exiles marching into slavery. Then there are the others – of prophets and priests, kings and nobodies – who risk everything to follow a promise. Jesus Christ was no stranger to the road, nor are His followers. The entrance to His road is unobtrusive, and its guideposts are perceived by faith. Its milestones are hard-won, and its stories … well, its stories are worth listening to.

University Players invites you to share the road as we meditate on our life’s journey together, asking, “Where are we from?” “Where are we headed?” “What stories has the Road told so far?”

(7) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

MARK 16:9-20

Jesus Christ gives His disciples the Great Commission. Christians aren’t to live in holy huddles, secluded from the world, “rabbit hole” Christians as they’re called by the late British theologian John Stott. Connection, immersion, and relationship with Jesus Christ calls us out as His followers into connection, immersion, and relationship with people who are Christians and people are not yet Christians.

When Jesus touched lepers He did so with love and compassion – and with the knowledge that He wouldn’t get leprosy, but that they’d be healed. When we have a single-hearted devotion to Jesus Christ we can reach out to the world with intention, compassion, and love, with the Jesus-story on our lips and in our actions. In fact, to do anything less than this is to deny God’s calling on our lives as His followers.

2nd Streeter Aaron Hopkins will teach this morning on the topic of turning our inward faith outward. Not all followers of Jesus Christ are called and gifted to be vocational evangelists. But we are all called to live out our faith in ways visible, consistent, and intentional.

EXODUS TEACHING 1: AN INTRODUCTION

Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt was one of the defining moments in world history. But in contrast to Hollywood’s treatment of the story, the Bible focuses on God’s revelation of Himself, first to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, then to His people the Israelites.

The Bible, from GENESIS to REVELATION is the story of God’s love for the people He has created, and who, because of sin, have wandered away from Him. The book of EXODUS is 40 chapters long, and we’ll begin our study of it together this morning. In this exciting book we will dig into the following themes and more: destiny and calling, spiritual discernment, sin and it’s cost, slavery and freedom from sin, the cost to God to offer redemption, forgiveness and a new beginning to us when we come home to Him. I will also tie this teaching into the reality that we are in the midst of Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter, and that this coming Friday is “Good Friday”, the day in which we commemorate Jesus Christ’s death for out sins on the cross.

8 APRIL | EASTER SUNDAY

(11) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:1-19

Jesus Christ, God’s Son, the second member of the Triunity of God has been eternally co-existent with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit for eternity. But everything changed on that first Christmas, when God the Son took on human flesh and moved into the neighborhood. Then three years later, when Jesus Christ was killed on the cross, and three days later was raised by God from the dead.

Why does the truth of Jesus Christ’s resurrection change everything? We aren’t made to live our lives separated from God – and the cross and the resurrection, make the reunion with God possible. Let’s explore what the resurrection means, what it doesn’t mean, and how it’s God’s heart that as His followers we live in the power of it every day of our lives.

EXODUS TEACHING 2: EXODUS 1:1 – 2:15

The Israelites prospered, even as slaves in Egypt, but a new Pharaoh came into power and forced them into hard labor. After Pharaoh commanded that all Jewish baby boys be killed his daughter found a Hebrew baby hidden in a basket by the river. She named him Moses and brought him to the palace to raise him as her own son. When Moses grew up, he killed an Egyptian and fled to the land of Midian. Does our past have to define our present and our future? How has God’s presence and God’s hand been on your life, even when you were running from Him?

EXODUS TEACHING 3: EXODUS 2:16 – 3:22

In Midian … a place often referred to as the “backside of the wilderness” Moses met a priest named Jethro and married one of his seven daughters, Zipporah. Later, Moses spoke to God out of a burning bush. Ya, kind of weird. But God wanted to get Moses’ attention and believe that He knew him and had a plan for his life. It was here that God told Moses to go to Egypt and lead Israelites out of slavery. Moses had a bunch of excuses and asked God His name and God said, “I AM WHO I AM” which means that God is able to do through us what He asks us to do.

Have you ever run away from God? What was the fruit of that journey? Some good things can happen in the middle of transition and change, but why make life more difficult than it already is? God calls us to surrender and press into plans for us instead of arguing with Him about what He’s asking us to do. Don’t think God isn’t speaking to you even if He’s doing it in a way He’s never done before … be open to His prompting, nudging, leading, and commanding coming from a variety of directions.

EXODUS TEACHING 4: EXODUS 4

The LORD gives Moses signs so that the Israelites would listen to him when he showed up in Egypt. But Moses was still operating out of a place of fear, so the LORD sent his brother Aaron to help him out, support him, and even speak for him as needed.

What excuses have you made up to try and run away from God’s will and God’s plans for your life? How’d that turn out? What about when we’ve been obedient, even though we’re scared out of our wits, and then when we get into the middle of God’s plans for our lives things go sideways? What does God want us to do then?

13 MAY

(15) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

EXODUS TEACHING 5: EXODUS 5

Moses and Aaron told Pharaoh to let the Israelites go into the desert to worship. Pharaoh refused and increased their workload instead. What’s the relationship between worship and being obedient to God’s plans, and seeing the plans of God open up so that we can walk into them and live into them fully? Spiritual opposition can be strong when we’re on the cusp of great obedience and great breakthrough. How do we stand strong when the pressure is ramping up not dissipating? Learning to move through spiritual roadblocks is something followers of Jesus Christ must learn how to do, or they’ll end up stalled-out in their faith and ineffective in living for God.

(16) GREGG LAMM TEACHING

EXODUS TEACHING 6: EXODUS 6

The LORD tells Moses that he’d lead the Israelites out of Egypt to the Promised Land. Aaron and Moses were from the tribe of Levi. Does God make things happen, or allow things to happen, or a cosmic/mysterious mixture of both? The sovereignty of God and the freewill of mankind will be discussed in frank and simple terms, calling into a place of surrendered partnership with God in the chapters of life we’re traveling through. Does it matter what our family tree is? This topic will also be discussed in terms of freedom and bondage, the sovereignty of God and our own freewill.
