GEOTECHNICS OF SOIL EROSION

Annual Report for 2004

The committee started officially in May 2002. Jean-Louis Briaud took over the committee in May 2003.

Completed activities

  1. The first committee meeting took place in June 2003 at the Boston Conference. At that meeting Giovanna Biscontin and Beatrice Hunt were selected as Vice Chairs. Giovanna was in charge of developing the web site and Beatrice in charge of membership. At that meeting, plans were made to participate actively in the first available conference which was GeoFrontiers-2005.
  2. A tennis tournament was organized at the Boston conference and Chuck Ladd who is a very good tennis player was honored at that occasion. He received a CD of a match between him and the Chair of the committee (Jean-Louis Briaud) at the occasion of the ASCE-GI conference: Settlement 94.
  3. A web site was created: Dr. Giovanna Biscontin created the web site to match the format of the Geo-Institute. The Geotechnics of Soil Erosion web site has been linked to the GI site. The address is http://ceprofs.tamu.edu/gbiscontin/erosion-gi/. The site describes many different items related to the committee including: Home, Members, News, Minutes, Conferences, Publications, and Links.
  4. A membership list was established by Ms. Beatrice Hunt. The list is attached to the back of this annual report. It shows 39 members of the committee and 6 friends of the committee.

Continuing activities and future plans

  1. Two sessions have been organized at GeoFrontiers (January 2005 in Austin, http://www.asce.org/conferences/geofrontiers05/). The first one is on “Scour of Foundations and Dams” and the second one is on “Geosynthetics for Erosion Control”. The papers have been submitted and are being reviewed. A GSP will be prepared which will regroup the papers from the two sessions.
  2. A short course on “Soil Erosion: Problems, Regulations, and Solutions”. The short course is co-sponsored between our committee and NAGS. Drs. Shobha Bhatia and Jean-Louis Briaud are the organizers of the short course which will take place on the Sunday just before the conference. Eight speakers will give presentations in this short course.
  3. An electronic short course and a series of 4 webinars have been proposed to the Geo-Institute on the topic of “Scour of Foundations”. The 450 Power Point slides are ready and have been prepared by Beatrice Hunt and Jean-Louis Briaud.
  4. Speakers Bureau. Jean-Louis Briaud has signed up for the speakers bureau.
