The Third Vice-President shall be the chairman of the Maryland 400 Patriots’ Fund Board of Trustees and shall coordinate Society observances, ceremonies, and entertainment, and will serve as the liaison for and visit the following chapters during his term – John Paul Jones, Col. Tench Tilghman, John Hanson, Capt. John Smoot, and Thomas Stone. The Vice-Presidents shall also perform such additional duties as requested by the President – By-laws, Article III (Duties of Officers): Vice Presidents

Activities:

Attended MDSSAR Annual Meeting on Saturday, April 16th at the American Legion Post 47 in Havre de Grace, MD. Provided two patriotic door prizes from Shop-Rite and Lowes and sold $205 in raffle tickets.

Attended Col. Aquila Hall Chapter meeting on Sunday April 17, 2016 at the Smithson House in Darlington, MD. Submitted a request to attend the 126th NSSAR Congress in Boston as a State Delegate.

Contacted each of the five Chapter Presidents to introduce myself, and requested an invite to attend one of their upcoming Chapter meetings.

Coordinated and arranged MD400 Committee and Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, May 18th at Timbuktu in Hanover, MD. Resolved MD400’s position on Monocacy Cemetery inquiry; project is not in the purview of MD400. Discussed Brooklyn Bus trip plans for special 240th commemoration at the Old Stone House.

Arranged MDSSAR Color Guard for the Ironbirds Opening Ceremonies on June 24th at the Ripken Stadium, Aberdeen, MD. Promoted MDSSAR and Col. Aquila Hall’s 40th Anniversary of patriotic service in Harford County.

Reviewed progress on the Maryland State Archives on the MD 400 Patriots Biographies research project. Owen Lourie will provide a status report at the GW Luncheon.

Arranged Annual George Washington Birthday Luncheon for Saturday, February 18th at Eagles Nest Country Club in Phoenix, MD. Prepared flyer for distribution and posted to website. Requested and confirmed Owen Lourie, Director of History, at the Maryland State Archives to be the guest speaker. He requests that a $100 donation be made to the Friends of the Maryland State Archives to continue colonial research projects.

Reviewed policy and procedures for the MD 400 Patriots’ Fund for review. Coordinating with MDSSAR Webmaster to post the information online. Expanding the MD400 webpage content. Webmaster will receive new information and create new hyperlinks.

Participated in the Bel Air4th of July Parade float as a combined patriotic unit with Col. Aquila Hall Chapter, DAR Wm. Paca Chapter, and MDSSAR Color Guard. Dressed in colonial attire and manned the cannon on the float.

Attended 126th NSSAR Congress July 10-13th at Westin Copley in Boston, MA.

Attended MDSDAR William Paca Chapter Tea at Maryland Golf & Country Club for 100th Anniversary on August 5th. Led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Coordinated and executed the SAR, DAR and 75th Infantry bus trip to Brooklyn, NY to participate in Battle of Brooklyn/MD 400 activities on August 20th. Led a brief side tour at the American Legion Rawley Post where the Maryland 400 plaque is dedicated to our fallen heros. Read at the podium a section of the Honorary Roll Call at the Old Stone House, 240th Commemoration Ceremony. Led bus tour to the Maryland 400 Monument in Lookout Point in Prospect Park, and assisted with the wreath laying ceremonies.

Attended the Semi-Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 22nd in Historic Chestertown, MD. Coordinated a request from the Maryland Archives, with recommendations from the MD400 Trustees, for continuation of the MD400 research project. Funding approved by BOM at October meeting in Chestertown with detailed coordination by MD400 trustees required. 3rd VP report was submitted electronically for archive.

Received permission from the Maryland Military Historical Society (MMHS) to use the painting of General William Smallwood’s Maryland 400 Regiment leaving Annapolis for Battle of Brooklyn in August 1776. Credit to MMHS will be posted under the image on our MD400 webpage. Coordinating use of the painting for MDSSAR fundraising items; note cards, lithographs, and other collectibles.

Reviewed a grant request from Prof. Adam Goodheart, Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, Washington College, for MDSSAR to sponsor one or two college summer internships to students working on a project under a mutual agreement. This proposal will be discussed at the January 7th 2017 BOM as a future possible education program. A typical grant award is $5,000 for a summer internship. The MD400 Board of Trustees likes this education program, but recommends that criterion and budget be developed in advance of making a grant award.

Attended the John Hanson Chapter meeting and dinner on December 5th at Mama Stella’s in Clinton, MD. Assisted in the installation of new members.

Coordinated an Executive Committee teleconference for Wednesday, December 7thfocused on MD400 Committee and Board of Trustees topics. A key decision was achieved to proceed with the new MD400 Honorary Regiment recognition system with a medal and insignia pin using military rank names similar to those of Gen. Washington’s Continental Army.

Coordinated and developed a new medal for the MD400 Patriots Fund recognition system. Created the graphic arts and a flyer for posting to the MD400 webpage which explains the rank names, insignia pins, and contribution levels. Vendor quotes were obtained, a selection made, and a purchase order processed. A total of 100 medals and insignia pins are planned for an awards ceremony at the 2017 GW Luncheon. Approximately $5700 has been received in 2016 from 88 donors. Treasurer Gary Neal has prepared a chart which summarizes the donors’ cumulative lifetime contributions, and their corresponding rank.

Attended the 55th Annual MDSSAR Patriots Ball on December 17th at Turf Valley Country Club. Finalized the new MD400 Patriots Fund recognition system, and presented the flyer for posting to the MD400 webpage. Coordinated an email blast to all for their 2016 charitable contributions in order to receive a medal at the GW Luncheon.
