James S. Rickards Middle School
Mathematics Department
Implementation Plan
2015 – 2016
Curriculum:
The department will be following a Standards based instructional focus calendar. Each grade level will work collaboratively to create and implement lessons that are vocabulary intensive and rely heavily on the FSA Math standards. We will use a backwards design approach that begins with the end in mind and build our lessons around that idea.
Assessments:
We will assess monthly at each grade level to see whether our students have mastered the presented standards. The math coach will develop the common formative assessments so that our teachers and students maintain the assessment protocols that we expect in May. Assessments will include performance tasks that are designed to stretch the students’ abilities.
Remediation:
Depending on the data from our common formative assessments, students who do not show progress will be remediated through whole group, small group and pull out instruction.
Data:
Data will be maintained by the math coach and analyzed by the teachers. We will look at our item analysis to find trends that speak to our instructional choices, as well as help us determine what works best for our students.
Where we are:
Since FSA assessment data will not be available until later in the year we will use our initial assessment to gauge whether students mastered the skills that we deem relevant for the upcoming term. Our results are as follows:
· 6th Grade: 45.2% of our students are proficient on the addressed 5th grade skills
· 7th Grade: 48% of our students are proficient on addressed 6th grade skills
· 8th grade: 30.9% of our students are proficient on address 7th grade skills
Our goals:
Our goal is to have all students master at least 75% of the common formative assessment. This will ensure that our students will be proficient for the FSA administered in May.
